In this era when family-oriented cruises are increasingly popular, there are still some passengers who prefer a more sedate onboard experience.

That’s why Celebrity is trying out a pilot program called “Celebrity Escape” where the key element -- actually, the only distinguishing characteristic -- is that on four specially designated voyages no one under 21 is permitted.

Among the options include an 11-day western Caribbean trip on Millennium, a seven-day version of the same itinerary on Mercury and Horizon, and a 10-day Hawaiian cruise on Infinity.

Any takers?

More Celebrity News:

Celebrity announced this week that it has lured Dietmar Wertanzl away from Crystal Cruises.

Wertanzl, Crystal’s longtime head of hotel operations, spent nine years with the upscale line
starting from the very beginning of that company with its launch of Crystal Harmony (he was that ship’s first hotel director).

Attracted to Celebrity by the challenge of raising quality levels and working with a bigger fleet, Wertanzl, interviewed today by phone before a flight from Los Angeles to Miami, says he intends to recreate, to the extent possible with three times the number of ships, Crystal’s highly acclaimed service culture.

“From the beginning, the concept of Celebrity was to be a premium cruise line,” Wertanzl says. “Celebrity definitely has the potential to be different.”

In fact, he should know -- he was also part of the team that originally created Celebrity. These days, he plans first to tackle areas of consistency and quality in addition to service. “We have to look at how we support the staff and crew and establish new standards,” he says.

“Ultimately, the most important goal is
to take care of the guest and to offer a fantastic and hospitable cruise experience on Celebrity.”

Wertanzl, whose official title is senior vice president of fleet operations, which encompasses both the hotel and marine aspects of the cruise line, says big changes won’t happen overnight. Still, he notes, “we look forward to achieving
some small successes quickly. A smile is important.”

**************************************************

...O.K, that's enough, you've got the Job Mr. Wertanzl!

On the subject of adults only cruises,P.&O. ship Arcadia will sail full time for adults from April of this year.
They have seen a market for adults only and it remains to be seen if the demand is there to justify one ship running full time just for adults.

The Saga Rose, formerly Cunard's Sagafjord does year round cruises exclusively for adults over 50. It is always full. I think it would make good business sense for cruise lines to set aside one ship as an adults only vessel during holiday periods when some adults must vacation and would enjoy a respite from large groups of children who monopolize many shipboard facilities when school is out.

It's very rare to find children on Caronia. One of the things that attracts us to this ship. Colin.
