Carnival Corp announced they are partnering with a mexican company to build a cruise terminal south of Cancun. The port will be large enough for 4 mega-ships, and offer turn-around facilities for 2 ships at a time.

This means carnival, and its other cruise brands Costa, Holland America... will be able to make stops in Cancun, and begin and end cruises there. This opens all sorts of possibilities for new itineraries. Cancun was picked because it already has a strong tourist draw, lots of hotels, and good air support. Because it is a private port development Carnival does not have to allow other cruise companies to dock there. Looks like another shrewd move by CCL.

I think that is an excellent idea.

Cruising in the Carribean is going to be more popular because of the problems with flying.

We are eager to visit new ports.

Any idea when construction on the new terminal is suppose to begin (if it hasn't already) and when is it suppose to be completed?

Any idea what new the itineraries might be?

I think this is a great idea! We went to Cancun on an excursion, when we were on a Western Caribbean cruise on the Mercury. We were docked in Calica and had to take an hour bus ride each way to get there. We found that the hotels did not welcome cruise passengers to their beaches. They had men with Walkie Talkies patrolling the area. We had to walk a LONG way, just to be able to lay down our towels on the sand and swim. Maybe with the new port this will get better.

Smart move on Carnival`s part. This could open up a new destination in Cancun as well as a possible new turnaround port.
