November 02:

The International Transport Workers Federation has stated that, it has been notified by Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited that the company is moving the registration of its vessels from the Liberian flag.

It was reported some months ago that the Liberian registry income had been used illegally to buy arms. This was confirmed by a United Nations that found that LISCR, the US Company that runs the Liberian Registry, had knowingly diverted four payments totaling $925,000 to non-governmental accounts.

IT'S ABOUT TIME!!

Liberia, a corrupt and repressive regime, with a deplorable human rights record, and, now apparently a funder of international terrorism, has long been a haven for "Flag of Convenience" shipping.

Cruisers can obtain, from these pages and elsewhere, the countries of registration of cruise ships, and can (and should) withold their dollars, pounds, euros, dinars, and whatever from those ships and associated shipping lines.

I will accept the concept of flags of convenience, e.g. the "Nassau" registration of "Rembrandt."

But the stern counters of the ships on which I have traveled have read "Southampton, Le Harvre, and Marseilles." Never "Monrovia!"

I agree once again with you, Cambodge. I was so proud last February to look up at the INDY's beautifil pink stern and see the stars and stripes bravely waving. I only hope that a similar sight soon returns to the high seas.

Also, as an aside, I am told that one of the many fans of the DELTA QUEEN have given her a Gadsden flag to fly; it's the American Revolution era flag with the rattle snake that says "Don't Tread On Me".

I have heared that Royal Caribbean is willing to register their ships under the flag of their home-country again, which is Norway (homeport Oslo). Would be great if this became reality.
It would be nice as well to see Celebrity Cruises' ships with the Greek flag again, like the former Chandris liners used to have. I remember that, before the taking-over of Celebrity by RCI, the ZENITH for example always had a Greek flag on its mast to represent their home-country. Further more all their ships have the blue-and-white paintings which were designed to represent the Greek flag as well as the "X" on their funnel which stays for the Greek "Ch" (means Chandris).

Hah...I find this whole thing rather ludicrous. Here we have a company that for years deliberately polluted the oceans, falsified records even to the extent of keeping double log books, then spent millions denying it and trying to avoid justice. Not on a single ship or done by a couple of over-enthusiastic juniors, but fleet wide and with the knowledge of senior officers and managers.
Now, trying to sound holier-than-thou, and climbing on the bandwagon, they are making a big noise about something that's been going on for years not only with Liberia but other countries as well.
It makes me think, because of the bit about advising the ITF, that it has more to do with trying to buy them off from some contemplated action and getting a Norwegian Seaman's Union aggreement in place.
I for one, will never set foot on a RCI vessel as I very seriously doubt their competence.

Patrick...I thought Bergen is the Norwegian 'Flag-of-convenience'. Plus of course, since the Brits changed the tax laws to compete, I guess you could even include Southampton these days under that heading.

RCI already has a number of ships with Norweigian registry, so for them to change a few more should be no big of a deal.... The implications are very small since they already abide by their agreement with the Norweigian Seamen Union in all their ships...This is nothing but a marketing ploy to gain some sympathy... I agree with Gohaze about their fumbling of many issues, but it is very unfair to simply dismiss them as bad operators. After all, every other cruise line was doing the same thing, RCI was just the one who was caught first. I whish US laws were not so archaic and permitted some sort of international registry that would make sense for lines to register here.

Casin...you're right, about half of them are already registered in Norway... and that makes the move even more of a publicity stunt.
As for all the companies doing the same thing, no way. RCI went into it big time with changing piping systems to bypass the oily water separators etc.
As for the US having a different Register, how about the Marshall Islands? However I think the biggest problem would be the unions.

7 of RCI´s ships will be under Bahamas flag, the rest is not clear yet.

However, I can't imagine that it will be the Norwegian since that one is about 1000000 USD more expencive per year.

And about competennce of the company, compared to Carnival is RCCL far mutch better.

A watch officer on RCCL makes about 1100 USD better ( after tax ) per month compared to a watch officer in Carnival plus the have a way better vaccations etc.

And, you get what you pay for......

It's not the competence of the watch officers that I'm concerned about. It's the senior ones and management that deliberately initiate and condone breaking important laws over a long period of time that worry me. It's the attitude that it shows which is important, and does it reflect on other things such as safety...I sure as hell hope not!!!

Hell-o Stockholm, Heard that those already under Norwegian flag will remain that way; meaning that Adventure, Explorer, Grandeur, Legend, Nordic Empress, Radiance, (Viking Serenade), Vision and Voyager will fly the Bahama flag.

I am not surprised. Liberia has been deeply involved in the nearby Sierra Leone civil war and a major source of `blood diamonds`. In the current political climate, Liberia runs the risk on a major international boycott and I doubt a major cruise line such as Royal Caribbean wants to get involved even by FOC inference.

Hello,

When I was on Voyager in February she indeed was registered in the Bahamas.

However this whole thing really is a farce as gohaze says, since the Celebrity ships are still registered in Liberia.

As gohaze has said, the front-line people may indeed be very competent, but the senior management is devious, incompetent, and immoral.

When I was on Voyager they had the lifeboat drill during boarding... And we missed it. The law is that a lifeboat drill must be attended by all passengers and held within 24 hours of sailing. Other lines have held "make-up" drills within that period if late boarders missed the drill...

On RCCL we were asked if we had been on a cruise before, having answered yes we were given a sheet of paper with safety instructions and that apparently was our lifeboat drill.

This lassiez-faire attitude is dangerous.

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

Hello,

I am surprised nobody has reacted to the fact that while RCCL seems to be playing "good corporate citizen" with the whole "no money to human rights violating countries" and so on and so forth, that Celebrity's ships are still Liberian registered !

If the object of their change was really moral, why didn't they bother to change those ships not operating under their own name? And if it wasn't moral, what was it?

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny
