Will the lines permit these for use? If not, we may have to leave ours home. Please let us know.
We leave a week from today. Thank you for your help.

Hey Dambrosi, Hope u have a fun cruise. Last year we had a cheapie pair and they didn't work at all in the interior of the ship. Don't know if the more expensive ones work better. However they were VERY handy in the different ports of call, when the girls went shopping and the guys did different things we could still stay in touch.

Hey,
The kind that the people had on the cruise that I was on were the kind that work within 2 miles.

This summer I used walkie talkies and they worked pretty good. However I did get interference from other peoples walkie talkies and sometimes I even was able to pick up reception from the crew!

Titanicsteve-
most people use walkie talkies to communicate with other memebers in their party. This year I cruised with 11 other people. It was a good way to keep in touch when roaming the ship (especially the large ones!!)

We took our two grandchildren 12 and 13. This was one way we could keep in touch with them to make sure they were around for meals and also that when the kids programms ended at night we could find them. Very useful. We are going to use them next on our trip to the US, our son will be driving his car and us ours, so when we need to stop its cheaper to use the walkie talkie than to use our cell phones which will be long distance.

If this is the case, why don't cruise lines issue these to families on board with a different frequency for each etc. Apparently U.S ski fields and/or DisneyWorld have such a thing or so I am told, and it works really well for finding kids as you suggested. If I was going with friends, I would just say, meet in the ??? bar or pool at whatever time. Otherwise leave me alone and I'll see you at dinner!

What I mean is, will the cruise lines say no for passengers who still want to take them since the 9/11 attack?

TitanicSteve you hit it right on the head.
Is there anything wrong with the cabin phones, making plans and setting times when to meet?
Give everybody a watch, that's my solution.
If you want to teach a child responsibility,
how about holding him/her accountable to be on-time? I knew where my daughter was and what she was doing on the cruise ship. She knew where she could go to ask me something, and what the cabin number was to call me.

Please STOP THE MADNESS!!! Enough with the walkie talkies on ships!! Why are people so enslaved by communication that they need to talk to everyone ALL the time? I can understand wanting to be able to stay in touch on land in a foreign place, but in the middle of the ocean? Why can't everyone just relax and stay out of touch for a few minutes? I don't mind the semi crowded conditions on these mega ships at all but it is really aggrevating when you have to listen to everyone screaming into walkie talkies everywhere. Especially when they have mostly static and they keep beeping/ringing. I wouldn't mind it so much if they worked well, but there are so many people using them now that the frequencies all get crossed.

Take a minute and make a plan before you leave the cabin. Make a meeting time/place (ie If I don't see you by XX:XX meet me at the cabin). Loosen up a bit people.

It kind of cracks me up when I see people go on vacation with laptops, phones, walkie talkies, and internet connections in the cabins. Why bother going away?

I agree with Ascendancy on this one. Enjoy yourself!!

Thankyou Jasonalec for introducing some reality to this topic.

The idea of taking cellphones, laptops and communicators on a cruise seems bizarre.

If these toys are really requisites when on vacation, surely the cruise lines advertising should be changed to show passengers having a great time loaded down with this type of equipment.

Listen people, my husband can't always get off the ship and he wanted to know when I was off the ship and when I would return.
It gave him great relief to know I would be safe. They worked great thank you for your input. In these times as they are, these were what we needed.

I have to agree with almost every one above. I can not stand Walkie-Talkies, cell phone etc. However, I don't think you can lump notebook computers in this conversation. I happen to bring my notebook only because I use a digital camera. At the end of the day I transfer all the pictures I have taken to my Mac. This offers two benefits. 1) You have a fresh CompactFlash for the next day. 2) It allows you to reminisce with new friends and family.

There are purposes for all these 'toys'. Dambrosi, for keeping in touch with her husband when ashore, others [myself included] take laptops for digital camera use. I also took my mobile as I needed to keep in touch with my mother as father was undergoing a heart op. All valid uses.

What I can't stand is when people use the things constantly for no apparent reason. 'Darling, I'm walking through the xxx lounge towards the lifts, if you come up the stairs you'll meet me, Oh hahaha there you are..' and they carry on talking through the things in full sight of each other

In ski resorts, someone mentioned earlier, I've only been given a pager, which the childrens ski school 'ping' should there be an emergency and you then have to get to the nearest lift station to ring them. I have seen people using the 2 way radios, but not many as the cold kills the battery life

I'll second that!!!

Folks, you're on vacation - Anyone under 16 should be with ship sponsored activities, or, on shore excursions, with the family

16+ folks need some leeway but are still subject to family preset plans, meeting times and places.

Couples, without kids, need not be 'joined at the hip' but they too are subject to agreed to preset plans, Personally, hubby hates shopping so we do 'walk about' and pick a convenient coffee shop or park bench and agree to meet there at a certain time. Bored with my 'just looking' he's free to take off. Our system has worked well for many years now.....we're still cruisin'!

Gals - a caution - make sure you have a CC that's still solvent!

Oh my! What did we do before they had family radios. I find them annoying. They ring just like cell phones. I chose a cruise to get away from THAT! Leave them at home and just plan where you are going to be on the ship.

We use a digital camera - more correctly my other half does - he takes 2 memory cards, or whatever they're called - that's about 100 pictures! We make the transfer when we get home and send, by e-mail, to those with whom we've become friends - most people do have e-mail these days! No need to drag the laptop along.

I'm sure there are extenuating circumstances when a laptop/cell phone is necessary but, like Ascendancy says, communicate/talk with, your kids, friends or whatever, give them your cabin number, set some time frames and synchronize your watches! In any real emergency, ship personnel will track you down.

For Pete's sake, we're all on vacation! "Stop the world, I want to get off" - at least for a few days!

Happy cruisin'
