At no time did we have to submit ourselves to the "Wright Brother's Folly.!
Reason: The train!
Even in the pre-Amtrak days, travel to New York, Boston, and other east-coast US ports was not only easy by train, but the interface with the ship was simple. We took sleepers, so that we had an overnight from Boston; a night in the rolling hotel en route to Miami; or a comfortable coach seat and meals en route to Montreal.
People do not want to fly- neither do we. And we ain't gonna do so.
And we have no love for hours on I-95 either!
But between Amtrak and Via Canada it is possible to reach all the east coast ports; plus Montreal and New Orleans. This includes the alternative ports for the many cruise lines, ranging from Baltimore to Norfolk and North Carolina.
In the west, the iron horse can transport you to Vancouver, San Francisco or Los Amgeles.
And of course the Great Lakes Ports, Chicago and Detroit, for example, are well-served by rail.
You can board at numerous points about North America, although you might have to change trains, and firmly and safely on the ground, arrive at your port city. And your baggage stays with you - not an insignificant advanage in the era of minimal carry ons.
Think about it.
