I am booked December 8, 2001 on the brand new Norwegian Sun that is due out in September. I thought I would try out the new freestyle dining and the brochure said that they have 9 different restaurants.

I am a little upset that nowhere in the brochure did it state that some of the restaurants have a $10 per person charge to dine at them. I didn't find out about this until I looked on the website and pulled up a couple of the menus. Don't we pay enough for the cruise in the first place without charging $10 every night just for a change of menu?

Any thoughts on this?

I'm also booked on the Sun for the 5th or 6th of Jan/02. I'm not incensed at the extra cost myself. It seems modest if the quality is substantially better. However I would love to read your review when you return, in particular your suggestions re: Roatan and Belize City.

Since we're on to the NORWEGIAN SUN now, does anybody know if there are any significant differences between her and the NORWEGIAN SKY, given that that converted from an existing (unfinished) ship for Costa, while SUN is totally brand new?

Cheers,

Ralph

I think the best way for people to show their displeasure for extra charge restaurants is to boycott them. If those restaurants generated little or no business, the line might do away with the extra charge.

Jeanbean, the problem is that some people are silly enough to pay these type of charges, see:

We're booked on the inaugural voyage of the Sun and asked our agent repeatedly about this issue. They told us that only one would charge on the Sun - Le Bistro. I don't believe them though as the Sky charges for three! I've also heard that the Sky charges for ice creams at the parlour...is this true?
Confused.

NCL has a history of misleading people. I recently came off a caribbean cruise and the freestyle dining was really nothing more than charging extra for a meal. I also picked up their new brochure on hawaii, and there again, they make believe they have a 7 night cruise in Hawaii. Not true, 3 of the 7 nights are away from any Hawaii ports.

We were on Norwegian Wind last Christmas and had one dinner in the LeBistro restaurant. They served virtually the same food that was being served in the main restaurant. There was an additional fee of $10 or $15 per person. This was a special occasion dinner and the food and service was not particularly good.

Out of three cruises with NCL, we have had bad experiences on two.

We are set to go on the Sun for New Year's. I just called my travel agent 2 days ago regarding the restaurant issue. She is an excellent agent as is on top of all the new things with cruises. She has yet to receive any official information regarding the charges for dinner. She called NCL and was very upset to find that out of the 12(?) restaurants, 4 of them charge this fee. She wanted to know when people were going to be notified about this and they had no response. She is not very happy wih them. My husband and I were wondering if there was anything we could do because we booked this about 5 months ago and the NCL rep. then asked us what dinner time we would want!!! We are confirmed on the late dinner slot at a big table. So, at that time, the rep. didn't even mention freestyle cruising or these fees!

I was on the Sun over the weekend on a pre-inaugural overnight in Bremerhaven, Germany.

From what I saw the Bistro, Il Adagio (Italian) and East Meets West (Japanese/Fusion) restaurants all charged between $ 10 to $ 25 per person. I did not notice a charge for the Pacific Heights "Lean & Light" Restaurant, but NCL could surprise us here ...
