I noticed that QE2 (Southampton to New York) has port taxes of $260. Caronia (Southampton to New York with 9 intermediate ports) has port taxes of $295. Does that mean that Southampton and New York ask an average of $130 in taxes but the other 9 ports ask an average of $3.89?

I believe that port taxes are totally fictitious items that the line tacks on for a little extra profit. It seems to me that in the recent past someone sued and forced one of the lines to absorb the port taxes and not show them as an additional charge. I don't remember all the details, maybe someone else does.

There actually are port taxes. A better term for them would be "docking fees". Whether they add up to what the company charges under that name is another matter entirely.

Carnival just finished some sort of court case regarding port taxes. I don't remember the precise issues or resolution. But they still list port taxes separately.

Back in 1991, i believe, port charges for a transatlantic crossing on the QE2 was around $150. Has the cost of the real port fees gone up that much over the past decade?

The UK brochure has had port taxes included in the fare for at least the last couple of years. Their website makes no mention of port taxes at all.

JP, Does the brochure fare plus the port taxes match the website fare?

I have brochures that have
port charges as low as $25.00 for a 3 day cruise.
That was in 1980, I do believe these are a BIG problem. Somehow or other,
I don't think they do much
with them or we'd see more
cruise ships in Port Canaveral. This is just to
line the pockets of the officials who do nothing for us. I think the cruise
lines take a share for themselves as well. Like too many big ships being built, it's getting WAAAYYY OUT OF HAND.
