I made the final payment on my upcoming cruise today, and it seems like so much more than the original fare...I knew the single supplement would be a lot, but add on taxes, port charges and cancellation insurance, hell, I may as well be sailing Seabourn!

Does anyone know how they determine cruise fares and all the add ons?

Rex,

Here are the typical components that make up the cost of a cruise:

- base price
- tax
- port charges
- single or 3rd or 4th person supplement (varies depending on number of passengers)
- insurance (optional)
- air fare (optional)
- transfers (optional)

Insurance is optional but usually recommended unless you have never, ever changed your plans.

Rex, in the UK purchase tax (we call it VAT) is included in all our prices, so if something is labelled up as £1, you pay £1!

Cruise fares also normally include port tax. Insurance is normally compulsory, but you can choose where you buy it from. The cruise line is not the cheapest option for insurance.

Air fares and transfers abroad are normally include in the overall package. Sometimes our tips are included! Cruise lines like Fred.Olsen have lots of single cabins, so they are priced as such, rather than paying a supplement.

I'm not a big drinker or gambler, so I think it is the excursions that really do the damage. O.K. they are optional, but if you are in a port for a reduced day, in the middle of nowhere, you have little option but to take the excursion.

I still think that we pay more, overall, for our cruises, but we've had that discussion in before!

Thanks guys.

I almost forgot about drinking and gambling. I like to do both, so I have to take this into consideration as well.

I won't take any tours. Everyone tells me they are a rip-off anyway. I intend to go off alone in St. John's and Halifax.

Oh, God, and then there is tipping...jeez, Malcolm, I wish us Yanks had all-inclusive cruising. At least I would know that I would not have to spend any more money !

We Yanks do have all-inclusive cruising. It's called Silversea.

Rex - like Joe says, the above make up the cost of the cruise - the TA will spell each cost out for you if you ask - make sure you have valid reason for cancelling, e.g. medical and several other situations.

Everything else is optional.

What Line are you travelling with - some do include tips.

I'll be sailing the CARNIVAL VICTORY, so you KNOW with the exception of food and a place to sleep, I will be PAYING for everything else.

Rex, Carnival does have a plan where you can pay your tips up front if you want and you get vouchers to give everyone at the end of the cruise. Tips on Carnival are included in all of your dribnks(drinks-must have had to many already) etc.

Thanks, CTrail! Can I do it when I board or do I have to do that in advance?

And if you paid a per diem the same
as you would if you sailed Silverseas, it ought to be all inclusive; otherwise, it might be considered extortionary

Rex, I believe you can do it before hand when you book your cruise but I'll bet they will also take it when you first board as well.

Off topic, Karen and I just got in from seeing "Les Miserables" as it is here in Kitchener for two weeks, the only stop in Ontario. If it comes near any of you folk, go see it. It was wonderful, both the singers and the set. One of the best musical performances we've seen.

Back on topic.
Have a great cruise Rex.

Wishweweregoingto.
