Good question.

In Canada, Voyageur insurance has almost a monopoly on cancellation and medical coverage. Travel agents do not appear to be interested in offering any alternatives.

In most cases, almost 50% of the premium goes to the Travel agent for selling you the coverage package. This frequently is more than the commission they receive for booking the trip.

If anyone knows of a reliable alternative, I will be glad to know.

In Canada the best bet for travel insurance is that which you get included in the Platinum/Gold Visa Cards from the Banks. Check them out as the cost/benefits do vary. We've had ours from the Royal since they started them, and have used it several times including a month's stay in hospital on one cruise. The service is very good, one call to Assist in Toronto and everything was taken care of.

My TA has switched from Voyageur to TIC - Travel Insurance Co-ordinators.
Here we are 3 Canadians the only ones answering an American for info as to the best rates for travel Insurance. Pretty funny.

Don't know if their rates are the best but I would recommend Travel Guard. They are very reputable, have had several clients have to cancel and have always gotten their money back without any hassle.

Canada again!

Don't know anything about US coverage but Voyageur and Royal Bank are one and the same thing.

With TIC the rates may be better but you have to CAREFULLY check out the coverage - ye gits what ye pay for - read the fine print!!

Hi...I've compared Voyageur rates and coverage with Royal's Gold Card Visa and there are significant differences. Plus the Visa is automatically activated when you charge your trip to it, which makes it a lot easier to use.

Hi, I know you are in Canada and arrangements are very different to those in the UK here the market has changed at one time travel insurance was only sold through TAs but now all insurance companies, including car insurers offer these products, you can even buy them off the shelf here in Chemists. Why not approach your household insurer and ask if they offer policies, worth a try.

Interesting - an American question -

Like Bubbles says, there are many ways to buy insurance but to get the best rate for YOU, you have to shop around - there are so many variables.

Keep in mind too that Cancellation Insurance does not necessarily include Out of Country Medical Insurance - few Cancellation policies entitle you to cancel and get your money back at the last moment - here in Canada at least, there has to be a medical reason, death in the family or some other devastating occurrence - a change of mind does not count!

Personally, I'd rather spend $500.00 than lose my $4,000.00 cruise cost.

When we cruised on HAL in January, we made our travel arrangements thru AAA in they offered travel insurance that was better and less expensive. We took that.

Thank you all for your responses. I like the wit of the "jury duty" answer !!I obtained a list of companies, shopped their rates, and found Travel Guard 800-826-1300 to be the cheapest. Trip cost times .063 versus an average of .075., for my age group. The medical emergencies, etc. were all .
of the same coverages
Again, thanks.

We are preparing to go to sea again.

To get a jump on the topic of trip cancellation, I spoke with the owner of the agency where we normally book.

According to her, cancellation policies can only be purchased at the same time as you make the booking. In her case, this would only be with Voyageur insurance, or the cruise line/tour operator. She does not recommend either of these alteratives.

If correct, there would appear to be no point shopping around for cheaper cancellation coverage. It can only be obtained thru your agent.

It seems that we are being squeezed where I feel the most discomfort.

Bearing in mind that I am talking the cancellation aspect, can anyone, especially an agent shed light on this

Not true. Please remember that we are not talking about the HEALTH issue but about the pssibility of a cancellation due to unforseen circumstances. TRIP CANCELLATION INSURANCE c an be shopped around ,as i did. If one has spent, say, $6000 per couple on a non-refundable passage, it is prudent to pay $300-400 in premiums in case one has to cancel, for whatever reason. (like jury duty or if your heart attacks you)

This thread makes me think the US travel insurance market is less well developed than UK's! Probably because so few of them travel much outside their own Country! LOL. In UK most people who travel a lot can get an annual policy from any number of outlets. For many years now we have one of those through a major retail store - Marks & spencer. So last year we were covered for a week in Spain, a cruise to Far East over a month long & my 3 week Antarctic trip all for around $200 for cover of both of us. Perhaps US will catch up when they all get passports! Eric

UK travel companies will not allow you to book a holiday without having Travel insurance. It's compulsory and sensible.

However there's lots of competition making our Travel Insurance reasonably good value.

I'd suggest you check out
www.insuremytrip.com
You'll be able to compare many different trip insurance plans, and get quotes right there. You can decide the coverages that are most important to you, and the premium you're willing to pay for that coverage.

I find that Travelex offers all the basic coverages at less than half the cost of Travel Guard.

....and no, I don't work for Travelex!

Yes Mike, but if you got a job tomorrow with one of your 'competitors', you would be telling us that they are better than Travel Guard.
