I heard on NPR radio yesterday that Carnival settled a law suit reguarding port charges. It said they inflated the price. It was just a brief comment and said that 1000 of pax (don't know the excact #) would be getting a $55.00 voucher which could be used towards a future cruise or redeemed for cash! Does anyone else know or heard about this. Kevin

Hi!

The news release I read said the vouchers would be in amounts from $25-55. The amount actually received would depend on the actual cruise booked. The voucher could be redeemed for cash.. but I think it was for only 20% of the face value.. which isn't much.

As past passengers we received notice of the class action suit sometime ago. If it's anything like Royal Caribbean's you won't be getting much. My husband and I received different amounts of vouchers, although we sailed on the same ships, when contacted they had no record of him sailing, but if we had our original receipts we could send them in and they would review it! The vouchers were very specific as to when you could use them, I believe you had to book within 90 or 120 days of sailing, only good on individual bookings, not groups, only so much per cruise could be used and if you sent them $50 worth of certificates and you could only use say $40, you did not get a refund. Really limited usage!

I received my notice of the proposed CCL settlement. I have not heard if it was in fact a done deal. It propably will be. It is in the range of $25-$55. In the case of RCCL, I was able to use multiple vouchers on 1 cruise (totaling $100) It was off an already discounted rate.

We just received notice that we are part of this class action suit too. We sailed on the Fantasy in 1994 on a three day trip to Nassau. The inclusive dates for the settlement are April 19, 1992-April 19, 1995. The settlement states we have four years to use the voucher from the time they are issued. Cash payment is equal to 20% of the face value. The voucher amount depends on the length of the cruise.

3-6 nights $25.00
7 nights 30.00
Over 7 nights 55.00

We are sailing on the Jubilee April 2002 to Grand Cayman and Cozumel so I hope they get these in the mail in the next year. If they don't, I guess we will have to book another cruise! Since we like Carnival, that won't be a problem! I was a party to another class action suit and once I was notified of the settlement, it took four years to get the $.

This is a typical class action lawsuit. The only people who get anything are the lawyers.
In order to get a settlement they have to maximize the apparent value of the settlement. Thus the coupons. Since a reasonable legal fee is a percentage of the settlement value for "plaintiffs" the lawyers need to come up with a formula that makes it appear bigger.

The whole thing is a shakedown. When they come up with some way to pay the lawyers the required $5-20 million, and only paying a total of $10-25 million they have a settlement. 90% of the coupons get lost. So the whole thing only costs Carnival the attorney fees.

I have been thinking about your post and the "Carnival Refund" doesn't seem catchy enough for a new ship. I like your sense of humor!
Who knows....after this Carnival may use it!
