I already told my boyfriend that we are going to marry on a cruise boat. We're planning to do it in 5 five years so by then there will be lots of new big boats (-; Do you know which RCCL and Celebrity boats have on board weddings..

We saw a couple married on the Sensation. I noticed that they wedding took place before the ship left port, is this normal??? The couple had the cabin over looking the pool area on lido deck it had huge windows all on one side if anyone was in the cabin you could see them moving around. When the "march breakers" saw anyone up there they would let out a huge cheer. After the first day the curtains remained closed.!!!!

We didn't get married on a ship but we did take our honeymoon on one. In fact we were even upgraded to an outside cabin on that trip. Unfortunatley, that cabin only had single beds that couldn't be pushed together. In our original cabin they could. We told the Purser that we didn't want it and expained why. She apologized but told us she couldn't change it because the ship was sold out. We took matters into our own hands. We went back down to where our 1st cabin was. There was now a mother and daughter in there and we offered to switch with the. Needless to say they were quite pleased and so were we. This was my husband's first cruise and he was hooked.

Regarding getting married on ship. On most cruise ships the Captain can not marry you. That's why you have to get married while still in port where you have to bring in your own clergy. Now on the Grand Princess and probably her new sister the Captain can marry you, right in their own little chapel.

BTW, we are celebrating our 10th anniversary on the Crown Princess in 3 weeks.

Why anybody gets married, least of all on a cruise ship beats me.
Why ruin a good vacation?

That very much discribes the situation we had on our honeymoon execpt there we NO cabins on the Island Princess that could be converted to a double. By the 3rd night our room steward figured out what we were doing and was making up our "bed" on the floor. 0

As far as I can see, the there are two big advantages of getting married on a cruise ship:

1. You don't need to go anywhere for your honeymoon!

2. Maybe many of your relative will not bother (or be able to afford) to attend?

We got married on Holland AMerica's ss Veendam (now enchanted isle) in 1981. Ceremony was while shipped docked in NY Harbor. Reception on board was small, but everyone remembers everything about it to this day. We then sailed to Bermuda. In a few weeks, April 7, we are sailing again (first time since then), this time on Celebrity Century to eastern carib, with our 11 yr old daughter. We plan to see if we can renew our vows on board the Century...not looking to spend money for this, but if it can be done by the ship's chaplain or someone, will be great. The best memory is when we sailed off, having everyone on board cheering us and waving good bye to our family and friends.

I don't believe the captain has the authority to marry people while at sea. That practice ended a while ago. Even at the docks, was it the captain that married people or was there a clergyman that actually pronounced the couple man and wife?

I'm sure you are right! In fact I'm not sure they ever could? It may well be a modern myth?

I do know that a HAL Captain cannot marry anyone on board - a clergyman has to do this. I have seen a few weddings on board HAL ship, performed BEFORE we left port. I always remember one middle-aged couple being married on board before we left and the next day & probably for the whole cruise, they weren't speaking to each other!
Wonder how that one ended!

cruisernh1...just got into this site, so that's why there's so much time between your question and my reply.

Wife and I got married on Carnival Sensation back in '94. Then did a 2 week back to back cruise of western then eastern carribbean. it was the most romantic wedding and fabulous cruise I've been on...it was actually and still is, my first cruise.

"A Wedding For You" was the name of the company we dealt with for everything. I was a little nervous at first living in Massachusetts and planning a wedding in Florida (it was my 1st and my wife's 2nd marriage, so she let me do all the planning), but they were extremely helpful, pleasant and treated my wife and I like a king and queen.

I could write 20 paragraphs about all the details, but I don't want to bore you and everyone else...unless you REALLY want to hear about it!! The one detail I'll mention is...we flew into Florida a day ahead...the company picked us up the next day at our hotel, drove us to the pier and when we got up to the check in line, there was already a few hundred people in line. Not a problem...we were escorted to the head of the line and checked in even before it was time to start checking everyone else in!

Suffice to say...It was the best experience of our lives, I highly recommend the idea to couples looking for something different for their wedding. You can have one as small or large as you want.

Like I said, it was my first and only cruise to this point. My wife and I haven't really gone anywhere big and special since. This year we said to hell with it...we're booked on the Carnival Spirit for a 12 day Hawaii cruise this Sept. 26th...for our 7th wedding anniversary.

Can't wait!! I'll post a cruise review when we return.
