Interesting board- the topic on PFH gave me pause!

Anyway- I've never cruised, but planning a trip (with my brother) for July/Ag. to the Med (Greece, Turkey, maybe Spain). Thought I'd ask for input. Personally, the Star Clipper and Wind Star lines look really appealing. I'm not very formal and the watersports look like a blast- I'd love to learn to scuba.

Anyway- any hints on good lines/ships and any hints for the planning stage would be greatly appreciated. A bit about me and what I'm kind of looking for: my bro and I are both early 30's- and would just as soon avoid a lot of kids; while neither of us are looking to hook up (I am female- don't let the name fool you), the thought of being surrounded by honeymooners isn't overly appealing. I'm not too key on the idea of being the only person under 40 either! I am American- but REALLY don't want to be stuck with ONLY folks from the U.S.!! In short- I'd like to be with a fairly diverse and interesting group of people. I make friends easily- I'm the one sitting up playing cards at 2 a.m. with the boys. I don't need disco balls, but good beer is a requirement! I'm not a formal person- I'd really rather pass on the 'black tie'. I like enough direction so I don't feel lost- but not so much I feel smothered. 'Laid back' is probably the best way to describe what I'm looking for.

Anyway- the two sailing ships sounded a little smaller, more informal, perhaps more interesting- and I like the idea they go into some less traveled ports. Any feedback regarding these lines (7-10 day cruises)? Any hints on other lines I should check out? Remember- I'm totally new to this and absolutely clueless! Thanks in advance for any hints! Later- Robin

Welcome aboard Robin. I have never sailed on either of these lines, but have visited the Wind Surf and have had friends sail on Windstar cruises. They are very laid back, no formal clothes, in fact no jackets for men. Nice casual clothes for evening - I think dinner is open seating. Great spa facilities, if that is what you are interested in. Younger crowd - you won't find small children on the ships.
Yes, they can go into smaller ports and from what I saw lot of water sport equipment. Don't know if you can learn to scuba off them. Think you may have to be certified.
One thing that I was surprised about is that the Bridge if open to paxs 24 hours a day. The hotel manager was giving us our tour and he said, "if you can't sleep at night, just come up here for a coffee - the pot is always on". Oh, no movie theatre, no entertainment, a small casino.
Hope this helps a bit. Think one of my next cruises may be on a Windstar ship.

Hi Robin--I agree with Sympatico: Windstar should fit your plans perfectly. Nice mix of passengers, including ages. No kids to speak of since there is little to interest young ones. Dress is casual, including dinner which is described as "country club" casual (no jeans, sweats, shorts but no jackets for men required either). We enjoyed our Med cruise tremendously and I think you would too. I recommend Windstar, and the line often has very good prices and specials. Welcome to cruising!
