Something that has occurred to me, is if you meet one of those passengers on a cruise ship that is complete pain in the neck, it would be extremely difficult to escape from them for the rest of the cruise!

Has anyone ever experienced this?

Yes, we have one that travels with our group. I wouldn't classsify him as a passenger from hell, just a "pain in the butt". He wears a hat with his name on it everywhere & I mean everywhere even to formal nights, going through the Captain's receiving line and at dinner. He sat at our table on one cruise, came to dinner with the darn hat on (we had the Security Officer sitting with us at dinner). I politely asked him to take off the hat at dinner - that it was rude and he complied - wasn't too happy about it though. He drives everyone in our group nuts with that hat, but some pax's who have met him for the first time think he is funny and cute and one Hostess even made him Mr. *****DAM.

Just reading your post made me flashback to our last cruise to the Panama Canal on the Crown Princess. Their was a table for six, located directly behind us. Now, don't get me wrong, I love to laugh and have good conversation at mealtimes. However, the group behind us were so loud, especially one lady with a piercing laugh. She would laugh at anything said, and I mean anything. It was so disruptive, the table for six next to us did alternative dining for most of the cruise. We opted for it a few times ourselves. They even were loud at the pool, which is hard to do when the band is playing . You're right! It's hard to escape

Regards...Bob

Which is why 95% of travelers have never been on and won't take a cruise. Traditional dining is a crap shoot.

Anyplace else onboard you can avoid them.

Stayed away from ships from 1982-1998.

I only had 2 of 8 cruises where there were no majorly obnoxious people.

My previous reviews of of the Regal Empress noted the societal debris that line attracts. Try to find a passenger NOT from hell. Never will sail her again.

I have cruised as a young child and also as an adult. I recall the Olympia had many children and teens. I recall remarking to my sister's teenage friend about her breasts much to her embarrasment.

The Queen Anna Maria; next year's cruise, had a kosher kitchen; the chef ended up chasing out the rabbi with a butcher knife.

The people at the table next to us had a 2 year old girl who would #2 at the end of every dinner and cry loudly. There was a 300 lb woman who wore spandex and complained loudly about everything.

When sailing the Canberra all the families were in one section of the dining room. We had 2 tables near us with constantly shrieking 3 year old boys. One would only eat ravioli, and screamed for such, turns out they had it. Another named Jordan would shriek and his parents would shriek back in Frank and Estelle Costanza style. Ond day my kid sister was misbehaving and I said too loudly "Your manners are as bad as Jordan's"
Jordan's father gave me a dirty look.

My parents who had enough of the "Big Red Boat" prototype next booked the Stella Oceanis, where there were few kids, but many subtle "Hyacinth Bucket" and "George Babbitt" types. No one I recall was spoiling other people's good time.

There was a doctor late in the evening after drinking too much would get up on the bandstand, grab a microphone and sing along off key.

My Sea Breeze cruise was in response to my bad experience with Regal. The people had much better etiquette. Our dinner table had a well meaning but motor mouth stand up comedian type who dominated every conversation. There was a misanthrope who lied about his ivy league credentials, and when found out he sulked at every meal. Guy looked just like actor Wayne Knight and was from Northeast Philadelphia. He was nicknamed 'Newman the NEWT' [acronym for Northeast Philadelphian]

The Rembrandterdam was great except for one luncheon that was right out of a Fellini film. A red-neck Jed Clampett/Snuffy Smith type wearing a DA and a Mickey Mouse undershirt, and his put upon aging 'sock-hop' wife whose hair was a strange shade of aubergine; He kept sending back his food and complained about everything. Across was a black lesbian Joan Armatrading/Tracy Chapman type nurse from Cleveland whom I felt sorry for having to make conversation with him. Wish I could subtitle their words for thoughts, [later she told me she found him comical], me, and a Korean couple. The Koreans found the whole thing amusing as I whispered to them that this
is a Fellini movie.

Reminded me of the cruise when we were seated next to a table of 8 kids. Their parents were at a table near by and did absolutely nothing to correct their loud behavior. I quess they had the attitude that they were on vacation and didn't want to be bothered. Even the waiter (who couldn't say anything) gave looks like I'm sorry to all the other adults at the surrounding tables. We travel with our kids but the difference is they know how to behave in public. They know they are on vacation to have a good time but not at the expense of others. It really isn't fair that some people are so self centered, and don't know how to teach their children manners. Thankfully most of the people and kids we have been fortunate to come in contact with on our cruises have been extremely nice. This post sort of reminded me of that time so I thought I'd voice a reply. Anyone else have an experience like this?

No fat lady, no man with a stupid hat, no loud person with a piercing laugh, nobody like that could be worse than a constantly crying child/baby.
RCCL has been nice enough never to sit us with children.
Really, this is why you should travel on the big new ships. The larger the ship, the more places to hide.

I have never come across anyone exceptionally rude on a cruise. Of course there are one or two people/groups oblivious to those around them, but they are easily avoidable. It often depends on the price I suppose: cheap cruise, cheap people; expensive cruise, arrogant people (although I am aware that this isn't always the case, but if we are taliing stereotypes...)

Paddy.

On one cruise we were seated at a table for six. One of the couples were newlyweds.
His second marriage, her first. They seemed to be in their mid 30's. We only sat with them for our late seating dinner.
The woman would send everything back. By the third night the waiter came back in five min. after he served us and asked her what she would like. It was this way every night. Making our table one of the last to leave.
So we either skipped dessert or were late for a show.
Pat.

Let me tell you... passengers from hell cruise the luxury lines as well. They do not merely gravitate towards the Regal's and Premier's of the world.

One such "PFH" was a physician from a south central state... and his equally obnoxious wife. Even when you tried to ignore them.. they would get right "in your face". I finally told the dr at dinner (I had the misfortune of being seated between him and one of the ship's officers" "Good thing this is only a 7-night cruise. Any longer and the pax would vote to have you keel-hauled." Everyone - except the dr and his wife - cracked up laughing. I received many condolences later that evening from other pax who saw who I had to sit next to at dinner.

I don't really have a PFH that I have run into after 5 cruises, Except for our last one. I almost met them on a Carnival cruise, PFH's would show up at the pool at 8 am to put shoes and towels on deck chairs to hold them. I never saw these passengers from hell, but my wife and I spent many hours on the pool deck sitting on the few (unreserved)chairs on deck, sitting next to their shoes.
On departure day, I expected to see many shoe less people, but I guess they do actually come on deck sometime to reclaim their shoes. (I think many of you know what I mean)

Although We typically cruise with a group of friends, my husband and I have gone on 4 cruises with just the two of us. We really enjoy meeting new people, so we always request a large table and usually have a great time. However one one particular cruise we were seated with a family of four including husband & wife, grown daughter and the wife's mother. They were actually very lovely people as long as they were not talking to one another. They never raised there voice or openly fought, just snide remarks and comments that were exacerbated with each glass of wine. One on one they were actually truly interesting and engaging people. They were very well travled, articulate and great conversationalist. However put them together and it was like oil and water.

It is not only on Carnival that you meet this sort. At least one person on this board openly admits to doing this and certainly not on a Carnival line.

Really to bad when people feel that they own the place and even though they may not be using the space, they certainly don't want anyone else to enjoy themselves. Me, me, me the one prevailing attitude of this type of person.

Some experiences are so painful and humiliating that that I only recalled the facts of the following after reading this topic.

After a few years of not cruising, we returned in 1995 with a trip on the Song of America to Bermuda.

At our table for six were a couple of obviosly affluent nouveaux riche Americans. He had apparently come from small beginnings, and was for example in process of aquiring his first corporate jet.

It became obvious early on at the table that we might be in for an interesting time. First signs were the placing of bills between the middle fingers and palming them to the wine waiter when service was rendered. I had not seen this practice in years.

After finding out our nationality he went to great lengths to explain how our country existed because of the goodwill of his own. Particularly he did not do business with us because of the payoffs that were necessary to get any orders.

On International night in the dining room, he casually reached over to the table centerpiece and removed the Canadian flag from the grouping. His comment being something to the point that "they're not significant" anyway.

You may well ask why I didn't try to floor the SOB. Looking back, it sure beats me.

Topgun - Everyone at your table probably would have applauded you if you had slugged him. What an arrogant SOB
How dare he remove another country's flag from the table and then say that country was insignificant, especially our country.

and if that A#*h&le was invited to the Captains table would retort
"You mean I gotta eats with the crew"

Tell us, did he chew with his mouth open?
Did he wear 3 gold chains and a pinky ring?
Speak in double negatives?

PS there is a 2 part episode of "Keeping Up Appearances" where Hyacinth Bucket is on a QE2 cruise; good footage of the ship.

Many years ago, on my second cruise, We were seated next to a table filled with PFH. A table of 8 young women (ages about 25 to 35) who took 'Women's Lib' to mean they could be as loud and obnoxious as a group of drunken frat boys. We shared a waiter and busboy, who remained gracious for the first 5 days of abuse during 7-day cruise. That 5th night, one of the senior members of the group grabbed the waiter up front and below the belt and said loud enough to he heard at several tables that she wanted this delivered to her room.
The waiter dropped the serving dish he was holding, said he would no longer serve them and left the dining room. The waiter captain only was aware of the waiter's action in this scene. He went to the table and apologized to the 'ladies' and then came to our table to apologize for the disturbance. We let him know about the abuse the waiter and busboy had endured for the better part of the cruise and we apologized for the rude, crude and unforgivable behavior of our countrymen. The waiter returned at the next meal but the table for 8 was empty for the remainder of the cruise.

We have seen out share of PFH's over the years but fortunatly have always had some distance.
On one cruise there was a lady at the table next to us that sent something back at EVERY meal! As her meal was served we would quess at what she would be sending back. We were finding it to be great entertainment. The poor waiter was going nuts.
We always ask for a large table because we feel that meeting people is part of the cruise experience. There was one time that we had someone at the table that we knew right away was going to be a problem. We made some sort of excuse and had our table changed.

There certainly are rude and obnoxius people on the mega liners - our cruise from hell on the Voyager last year is evidence of this. And as big a ship as it is you could not get away from this unruly, obnixous group of kids from New York.

On our first cruise (15 ago) we were originally seated with a real redneck oilman and his diamond encrusted lady. One meal was enough and we asked (horrible thought) to be seated at another table. We wound up with two mediocre couples like us and the Japanese social hostess who was a real delight. It turned out splendidly!

QE2 1999 - First day... I am on 3 deck and this old woman comes up to me and in her very loud American accent yells to me "how the hell do you find your way around this damn place." I was suprised to see a little old lady so annoyed and I said "where are you trying to go." so she yells " the Marutan Dining Room" I told her that its proper name is "Mauretania" and that it is found on Upper Deck... to that she walks a few steps and then says "What a damn stupid name for a restaurant"... Thank god I didnt see her again
