hey,
Why does UNSL travel only out of Hawaii? I think they could atleast have a ship go to the caribbean from Miami or Boston. Does anybody know why they just choose Hawaii?

Hawaii is an underutilized market. Also, the Patriot is an American flagged vessel.. and thus is allowed to sail unencumbered by the Jones Act.
No sense in sailing the the Caribbean market which is done to death by other ships ... all foreign flagged.

While I do not know the answer to that question, it could possibly be due to their rate structure. As it is now, their per diem is much higher than the rest of the lines that sail to the Caribbean and to Mexico. These lines have to have sales or sell offs to fill their ships even with the low rates. United States Lines would not be able to compete with their very high rates, especially with the very poor review they are getting for their onboard product. It makes even the worst operators in the Caribbean look good! It would seem they need the protectionist legislation to keep competitors at a distance.

When the two American Classic Voyages' newbuildings are out and running under the US Line banner in 2004, the current thinking is that the PATRIOT will go exploring new trades. The INDEPENDENCE will unfortunately be laid up and sold. Then again, alot can happen over the next three years.

[QUOTE]I would hate to see the Independence destroyed. I took a cruise on her a couple of years ago and found the accomodations, food, entertainment, etc. to be terrific. In fact, I have not seen better entertainment on any cruise. Not that I am such a world traveler, but I have also cruised on HAL, Premier and Carnival. It really surprises me that some of you have had negative experiences.

Of course their per diems are higher.... they have an American crew to pay...they make more money than their counter-parts working on foreign-flagged vessels. Take a look at what NCL is charging for "Leo's" up-coming cruises... on a modern ship.. and you'll see what I mean. But, of course, if you sail "Leo" you'll have to go to.. I think it is Christmas Island...

No, it's Fanning Island, so you lose 2 days in Hawaii.

United States Lines is a new name for American Hawaii, which was formed just to sail around the Hawaiian islands. They don't have any desire to go elsewhere, yet.

We sailed twice on the Constitution, and I suspect her fate awaits the Independence when the new ships are ready.

American Hawaii still exists as a brand name that American Classic Voyages is using to market the S.S. INDEPENDENCE. I gather that AMCV will keep the American Hawaii name until the INDY is sold.

Many of the crew are moved from the INDY to the PATRIOT as the need sees fit. After making a wonderful week long trip on the INDY earlier this month, I can not understand how the crew that I rave about on one ship can be the same ones taken to task while aboard the PATRIOT. Maybe it's something inherent to the ship!

Also the desire for US Lines to go elsewhere is there. Just pick up a copy of the last two annual stockholder's reports of AMCV. It's there and it's strong! Right now they can not do it because they do not have the equipment.

The reason that they only sail around Hawaii is that they could NEVER compete with sutch a bad product if they didn´t have Jones act to hide behind

AHC doesn't treat Hawaii as just a port of call, it's a cultural experience and home. If you are at all interested in Hawaiian culture, then AHC or USL is the only way to go. I've sailed on both the Constitution and Independence and found nothing lacking in the experience and it's the only way to see Hawaii if you are a first time visitor. I assume USL will get the kinks worked out, they do have AHC experience to draw upon. The Independence is also a great old liner and a pleasure to sail on. It will be a sad loss when she is retired. Captain Dana (can't remember his last name) told us she will be retired when we were on the bridge tour shown below
