I agree with your Dambrosi, but you need to send this message to your local government instead of the cruise lines. Cruise lines sail from the ports that offer them the best deal and the best facilities. If Port Canaveral wants more ships, it needs to offer the cruise lines more money in terms of tax/port charge breaks, etc.

I agree with the idea of having a greater selection of ports. Charleston, South Carolina is a great port, a historic city and a fun place to boot. Nathan is right that this is a political matter. States ports authorities need to get on the stick and Congress needs to summon the will and courage to repeal the cabotage laws.

Lot of People in "Chucktown" are opposed to more ships. They are afraid (rightly so?) of more Tee Shirt shops. The Market is tacky enough as it is now. But I do enjoy driving across the Bridges and seeing a cuise Ship in Port.

Only line using Charlseton for originating cruises now is Carnival. Would be nice if somebody else would do the same

Good point. I can understand the reluctance of some in the "Holy City" to not want cruise ships and your point about the market is well-taken (and true). For the cruise lines Charleston might open up new markets in the mid-Atlantic and even if some in Charleston may not like more tourists, I think cruise liners would bring in more of the affluent kind of tourists that local leaders everywhere seem to lust after. I must again re-state that the Congress needs to repeal out of date laws on the books. When that is done the cruise lines will able to offer newer and more varied voyages (such as a cruise of the Atlantic coast).

I've taken two Carnival cruises out of Charleston, and I'm taking another one in May. It's a wonderful port to sail out of, and it's great to be able to drive to your ship, as opposed to dealing with the airlines.

Jacksonville, Fl is going to build a cruise terminal. While the officials are gearing up for the Super Bowl, they also want to become players in the cruise industry.

I would say we currently get two ships a year.

The city would be an interesting port with St. Augustine and Amelia Island.

I'm still here lobbying for the cruise lines to offer a wider variety of ports. Jacksonville would be great for folks from South Carolina. It's a lot closer driver than Miami. Seems to me that making it more convenient to get to a port would open up a larger market for the cruise lines. Come on folks put on your thinking caps as far as making the cruise lines understand that a large market exists but many people can't always make it to South Florida.

I've posted these thoughts before, but was the subject is front and center, I shall do so again.

BALTIMORE!

It can draw on a significant market base of Metropolitan DC, Regional MD, and Metro Philadelphia. It has successfuly hosted Apple's Crown Dynasty "homeporting" plus Didion's charters. It gets intermittent visits from the most major cruise lines as well. Smaller ships can serve Philly as well, via the C&D canal. And it is also conveniently served by Amtrak's NE Corridor trains.

In short, you can cruise without geting involved with the bloody airlines and their incredible hassle, discomfort and inconvenience. THIS should be worth a lot - it is to me!

And, to Apple and Didion: With the loss of the Crown Dynasty do you have any candidate vessels for scheduled Baltimore operations this year?

As a Montreal resident, I'd love to see more cruise ships than the half dozen or so we get each year. So, I'm sure would local officials. The big problem, as I see it, is the distance of our city from the open ocean. A cruise ship doing anything other than the current autumn folliage cruises takes a day and a half to steam up the Saint Lawrence River past Quebec City and well beyond before you are into the Atlantic. A very beautiful day and a half, mind you, but still a deterrent.
