We sailed the Star in August, 1998, from Houston, Texas. She was known then as "the cruise ship from hell" because of the many air conditioning/electrical problems that she'd experienced earlier that year.

We loved our cruise.

The Star was very worn and tired. Our cruise was one of the last she made from Houston before NCL replaced her with the Sea. The furniture was old, the carpet was old. There was nothing particularly attractive about her at that time.

We found, however, that she was the perfect size for getting around. We also enjoyed the size because we frequently came across acquaintences we'd made, which promoted a friendly atmosphere. We had a wonderful time. The passengers as a whole were friendly, and we still keep in touch with friends we made. The layout of the ship was easy to learn. The service was outstanding. The ship was clean and comfortable.

I would love to sail her again now that Star cruises has fixed her up. Have a great cruise and report back. I'd enjoy hearing about her new and improved condition.

Eric, you probably already know that I cruised on one of her twin sisters in August - Black Watch (ex-Royal Viking Star).

She was well maintained for an old Lady, and such a charming ship. She actually felt like a real ship with fan tails, bridge wings and a wrap around teak prom. etc.

As Sherry said, she was the perfect size and very friendly. These were/are great ships! Try one while you still have the chance!

Above - Black Watch (See Ship Reviews, left menu, and my Black watch review)

i sailed on the norwegian star 30/9/99 out of sydney when she was under the managment of norwegian capricorn line (joint venture with norwegian cruise line). she had just been refurbished a few months earlier and she was a great medium sized ship to take us around the south pacific islands.
decor in the public rooms was excellent and most of these places seemed quite modern. there were only a few traces of fraying carpet lying around but im sure they will redo her soon. have a great trip!

Hello to all,

I have just disembarked from the Norwegian Star in Taipei, and wow what a change. Star have taken a wonderful lady and completely trashed her. Thankfully she is being rescued by Fred Olsen Lines who plan to purchase the Norwegian Star to replace the ageing Black Prince. Thank you for saving our graceful lady.!!

If anyone is interested in knowing more about the Norwegian Star please write

I have just disembarked from the Norwegian Star...hankfully she is being rescued by Fred Olsen Lines who plan to purchase the Norwegian Star to replace the ageing Black Prince.

Seabourne, that is interesting news! Olsen have looked after the 'Viking Star' pretty well.

I knew that Olsen was in the market for another ship, but I heard that he wanted to retain the Black Price and Black Watch and buy a third ship.

The Black Prince (1966) is a strange little ship, she used to be a Banana Cargo ship! However, she has a very loyal following with older Brits. I'm told that she is one of the most friendly ships at afloat.

I'm surprised that Olsen is buying such an old ship as 'Star', surely these great sisters can't have so much life left in them?

What did you mean by "Star have taken a wonderful lady and completely trashed her". What have they done???

The Changed to the Norwegian Star are really cosmetic only. The Funnel has been altered and the logo on the side painted. I would assume the image of the ship you saw was the one they are using for promotion which is the old Star Capricorn. The interior of the ship is receiving a battering though, maintenance not up to scratch, cabins poorly cleaned. Gone is the Midnight Sun lounge, replaced with a Casino, minimum bet $500,000Nt dollars, and no maximum. There are security cameras every where, Big Brother is watching you!! It is not a nice experience and definately not a cruise ship any more, it's a cattle ship. Get em on, throw grub at them and take their cash.

Malcolm...

I wouldn't want to get to involved, but I have been associated with the Star for many years and it saddens me to see a ship which is perfectly operational used and abused the way it is being run now.

Fred Olsen cannot pass up this marketing opportunity to have two sister ships running together again, and I can tell you from my contacts that every single norwegian officer has breathed a hugh sigh of relief.

Fred's web site says:

"Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is offering a range of Caribbean cruises in 2002 on its ship Black Prince all of which will use the port of Havana in Cuba as their base port.

Fred. Olsen is certainly breaking new ground with this programme, but is confident that this will prove to be very successful with its existing clients, plus attract a whole new market that is keen to explore this
almost undiscovered Caribbean island".

Seabourn, both Black Watch and Black Prince were based at Dover during the summer. Maybe the Nowegian Star and Black Watch will now be based there, while the Prince remains in the Caribbean, all year?
