The following is from the Chicargo Tribune.======THREATS FORCE CANCELLATION OF CRUISES TO CUBA
Alan Solomon November 19, 2000 A succession of threats, including a bomb threat to the ship, have forced cancellation of a series of cruises to Cuba marketed to American tourists by Toronto-based Blyth & Company Travel, according to company president Sam Blyth.
The cancellations were announced less than two weeks before the Nov. 18 inaugural cruise on the recently renamed La Habana was scheduled to sail. Among the speakers booked for the cruise out of Nassau was author and human rights activist Kerry Kennedy Cuomo, daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy.
"I just felt that ultimately we could not provide for the complete safety and security of the passengers in light of what's been threatened," Blyth said.
The cruises were designed to take advantage of loopholes that would allow U.S. citizens to legally travel to Cuba despite a general ban on visiting the island. Legislation designed to ease some sanctions against Cuba--but which at the same time formalized travel barriers--was signed by President Clinton days before the cancellation, but Blyth said the company's decision was unrelated to the change.
"The political situation in Florida has concerned us for quite a while," Blyth said. "It was a very viable program, but I don't think one, ultimately, that we could've operated safely."
Blyth said passengers who had booked passage will be offered alternative programs for visiting the island, or full refunds.
"We're not giving up," Blyth said. "We still believe strongly that Americans should have the right to visit Cuba. There's lots of them that want to, and if we can provide a legal basis to do so, we're going to continue to do it."=====Terry Donegan
Saw this on another board and posted on Oct. 11.......almost word for word.
There have been snippets of information in our daily press re refunds. etc. Blyth being local.
Have spent a couple of land vacations in Cuba - beautiful beaches - friendly people - but would not have sailed on those cruises.
