I have just confirmed that Premier has ceased operations. You should expect an official statement to be issued late today or tomorrow.

Wow, there's a shocker. I think anyone could've seen that coming. Sure is a shame for the Rembrandt, but I'm sure some other more reputable outfit will buy her and make a smashing success out of her.

I just spoke with a Premier Representative and Premier has indeed been shut down and all the ships have been seized by DLJ, whoever that is. All ships were reported to return to port. Premier has been forced to shut down. Apparently, all passengers will be refunded through some bond surity company. Who knows what will happen with all those poor travel agents who have commissions coming to them. A letter went out to all employees stating that they have been let go and the company will cease operations as of Sept 13th.

Looks like another Regency situation. It's hard to say what will happen with all of Premier's ships, but most likely they will be docked until they are sold.

Too bad.

Just had an e-mail from a friend who said she saw on the TV that the Rembrandt was seized in Halifax.

Barryboat - you are right - it is too bad.

Of course we all want the Rembrandt to be well taken care of and preserved...but let's also not forget that the Oceanic has historic significance and plenty of nice features, even if she has been tarted up in red for the last 15 years or so.

Go to CBC Halifax and you will get some of the story.

Here's a link to the story: http://cbc.ca/cgi-bin/templates/view.cgi?/news/2000/09/14/gordon_cruise000914

DLJ = Donaldson, Lundgren and Jenrette. Premier hadn't paid the mortgages to them and they went after the vessels and foreclosed leading to the seizures (maybe the ships should take some anti-siezure medication?)

Regarding the Rembrandt's fate. My parents just returned on Sunday from the 14 day roundtrip (NY-Montreal-NY). I guess they have the honor of being on the last complete cruise of the Premier Rembrandt. Great timing for my parents and their waiter (Robert Jaworski). For anyone that knows Robert, his last day was Sunday, 9/10. He's going back to Poland to get married and return to teaching English. My Dad called me last Friday from Portland while they were in port and he mentioned that Premier couldn't do something (can't remember what it was) because Holland America still owned the ship. The article at CBC Halifax refered by DianaD states in the ship profile link that Holland America is the registered owner. If in fact Holland America does still own her, hopefully they'll find her a good home.

I think everyone seems to agree that she's a great ship. I was on her Jun. 18 NY-Montreal because my original trip on the BRB2 was cancelled the day before. I now have (actually Premier has it) a worthless free cruise voucher for a future Premier cruise.

It's too bad that this happened. I liked the old ships (even the SeaBreeze). What other old ships are still sailing besides the Regal Empress?

I am sorry to say you are out of luck but before you get too upset get in contact with your Agent, all may not be lost. If you live in a State or Province which has an Travel Agent Insurance Programme you should be covered, the quicker you deal with this the better. Contact your Credit Card Company if you paid that way and see what you can do there.
Now trying to look on the good side there are some very good values out there with other cruise lines and I am sure your Agent will do her/his best to help you there.
I really wish you the best because I can imagine how you must be feeling. Please let us know how you get on, but again deal with it as soon as possible.
Good luck.

This is awful news. We are booked on the Carnivals Sensation for next March, I think I would die if something like this happened. I hope everyone gets sorted with another cruiseline or a full refund. I must have had my head in the sand, I have no idea what or when this all happened. What ships does this affect?

tg_lindo, good point. Let's hope there's some better days ahead for the Oceanic. That was such a lovely ship when owned by Home Lines. Premier made a mockery of her.

hooked, I'm not sure if this affects the entire Premier fleet or just the ships DLJ seized, but if they have ceased operations, as the story goes, I can imagine it may indeed be the entire fleet.
