For a more academic study of the market and brands etc try this excellent newish book. It is aimed at students studying Travel & Tourism, but I like it! It contains information on Marketing, Economics, Segmentation, and Niche marketing of cruising. It is not a history of ships!
It's written by Roger Cartwright and Carolyn Baird, and published by Butterworth and Heinmann, 1999. ISBN 0 7506 4384 6
It's cost is £30 (UK) You can buy it on-line at www.bh.com (Travel & Tourism section)
Have a look at www.traveltrade.com/cruisetrade/perdiem.shtml ...it gives the average per diem for the major ships based on the annual brochure rates. It is updated every year and it's interesting to see really just how little they do change.
In addition to the detailed reviews on this site, we have hundreds of reviews by readers / consumers at http://www.travelpage.com/yourfav/yourfav_cruise.htm .
When reading the reviews, note that people on their first cruise ineveitably rate all aspects of their cruises very high. As you might expect the more experienced cruisers offer more balanced view.
