The subject of how casual is casual ran its course. I found it enjoyable, thankyou.

With regard to mens attire, I started to wonder how formal is formal.

Personally on formal evenings, I dress in dark suit, red tie and black shoes . I believe it to be an occasion for the ladies to dress up and prefer to admire them instead of competing. To me, men who do dress up in tuxes are putting on the dog in some way. It just doesnt seem normal.

Also to me, formal is defined as dinner jacket and bow tie.
A tuxedo according to Websters dictionary is at best "semi formal". The origin of the tux seems to be a mystery, but it appears to be an outgrowth of the 1930"s hollywood style of ponced up dinner jacket.

Any opinions on this, especially real facts on the tuxes origin.
Fire away.

I wear a black tux or a white dinner jacket. Without fear of competing. On my best day I do not come close to my wife.

My husband is not a shirt and tie man never mind a tux, but he did dress in a nice dark suit and tie for dinner every night. I agree with topgun that it does seem to be a time for the ladies to dress to the nines. I know my daughter and I just loved getting ready at night for dinner, we wore dresses and suits that we would probably only wear at home for a very fine Christmas dinner out. We really enjoyed watching all the other ladies and young woman coming into the dining room and yes, sorry to admit it but I couldn't even tell you what most of the men were dressed in. I'm sure you all looked smashing though=

Must agree with 'Hooked on cruising' and 'Topgun'.
I find it difficult enough to make myself look presentable without having to compete with the 'stronger sex'.
Thanks to all you gentlemen who allow us to
have our moments of 'glory'.

It's compliment not compete.
The experience is for both of you not just the ladies.
My wife and I enjoy the chance to dress up on
formal nights. Not may places left where you
can enjoy the style.

Harborman,
Topgun said he preferred not to COMPETE with the ladies.
By not COMPETING he actually is COMPLIMENTING the ladies by deciding not to be one part of a COMPLEMENT.
I think his is a very stylish attitude.

Elsewhere on these forums under the heading "username", Scottylass surmised that I might be Tom Cruise in diguise. Think about it.

I always just bring a dark suit for formal evenings. I am going on my cruise tomorrow morning and I nearly forgot to pick up the suit at the cleaners. Aaaaaaaaaahhhh! Just about made it though.

Just as my husband enjoys seeing me looking special, I very much enjoy seeing him in his tux! And why shouldn't a "normal" man enjoy the feeling that he's looking good? If we ladies can, so can you guys! But I would never ask him (or anyone else) to wear a tux unless he felt comfortable. Dark suit and tie for the very formal evenings is fine. And if he really hated even that much, I'd be glad to eat at the alternative restaurants as our vacations are for BOTH of us. But I am glad he enjoys his tux because he looks VERY handsome and I enjoy showing him off!

WE love dressing up. I wear my tux on formal nights for several reasons. It's a sharp look for one. (It doesn't matter if you feel you are over dressed.) Plus I have to match the class of what my wife is wearing which is usually a very nice ball gown or cute slitted ...whew. Anyway I refuse to pack my nice suits for a cruise when I can just throw my tux's into the suitcase and not worry about it.

I have a comment for all the men...You must be forgetting, we like to look at a good looking, dressed up man just as much as you like to see us all dressed up in high heels

For me, it's a convenience thing. I rent a tux, thru the cruiseline, around $90.00 or so, and it's waiting for me on the ship. It's one less bag to pack. Definitely worth it to me!!......besides my wife makes me!

Hi..Tuxedo - Collins, US/Canadian name for a Dinner Jacket. - OED., a dress suit often trimmed with silk.
Named after a country club in Tuxedo Park, New York where it was first worn.

Personally I wear one as a compliment to the better half who spends a lot of time and effort to look good, and enjoys dressing up. Throw in a Blazer for semis and I'm good for as long a cruise as you like....peter

BRAVO to KrazyKat,Elizabeth, Mercy, etc...

We are retired and "dress down" almost 24 by 7 and it does our heart & spirit good to dress to the "nines" once in a while.

Matter of fact we dance almost every weekend with once a month in formal clothes.

It's a beautiful sight to see 150+ people all gussied up dancing to ballroom-style music.

Tuxedos or (white) dinner jackets depending on the season. As an aside, my wife has bought for me many more outlandishly colored cumberbands and ties than I have.

She's just as happy to see me all dressed up as I am pleased to see her beautifully dressed in her gowns etc...

Personally, I really enjoy wearing a tux and seeing my wife wearing an evening gown. But it doesn't bother me that not everyone shares my enthusiasm for formal wear. I think a regular business suit, or even shirt and tie is acceptable for those that don't want to dress up... While I certainly think its nice to see all the gentlemen wearing tuxedos or dinner jackets, I think we should bear in mind that people are on a cruise to relax - and if they can't relax wearing a tuxedo, then they shouldn't wear one. I do think everyone should give it a chance and wear it at least once, because they might be surprised at how good they feel wearing it!

I dislike formal nights and there are far too many! I wouldn't mind one, but 2 or 3 is a bit much. The last thing that I want to do after a day in the sun is to change into a gown. I certainly agree that shorts and jeans are inappropriate -- but you can look nice without being formal

Ok, I remember when one used to dress up for plane travel. Now most PAX look as if they are going to change the oil in their cars.(or worse yet, have just done so)

And yes, I remember first-class Pullman travel on the Century, Merchant's Limited, and Super Chief. And many have seen the poster for the "Orient Express."

Change happens! But not always for the better.

I still wear a suit to travel on the plane. I think people look better when they dress nicely, but it is their choice - but even people who don't always dress up tend to like the look of those who do. I frequently receive compliments. Those of us that like to dress up can only hope that the time will come when others will choose to follow our lead, rather than dismissing us as old fogies. And for the record, I am a 31-year old fogie.
