I was on the phone to Airtours again today trying to find a cruise (to no avail!grrrrrrrr!!!!!!!). The guy on the phone said that after the summer season Seawing is being taken out of the fleet to be totally overhauled, and then she is to be sold on. Airtours will then apparently be taking on a new ship. Any ideas which one? I always thought it would be Viking Serenade, but obviously not as this is going to First Choice.

Paddy.

I've just heard that Airtours have purchased the SS United States. They plan to have her cruising by summer of 2001. I've been lucky enought to see an advanced copy of the 2001 brochure, which features an artists impressions of the big 'U, in Airtours colours and the ships interiors.

Airtours have taken the bold step of changing as little as possible during the refit.

Airtours are discribing the decore as "breathtakingly minamalist, with the most spacious interiors of any cruise ship afloat". A unique and imaginative selling point will be that passengers will be allowed (in fact required) to bring one or two items of their favourite furniture with them on thier cruise, free of charge.

okay, we can speculate about her replacement, but where will she go. I have already suggested Thomson, Premier, or First Choice, but these aren't really that feasible. Having thought about it though, what about Festival? The already operate her twin sister (except for the funnels) the Flamenco (P&O's Spirit of London), or are Festival planning to get rid of Flamenco to make way for the new P&O Generation Fleet, giving another sister to a yet undisclosed line. Hmmmmmm.....

Well, when I was onboard I was told at Purser's Desk that the ship is going in for a refit but will indeed be returning to the Airtours fleet and the new brouchure with her details will be hitting the shelves soon. I was also talking to one of the officers who told me that the ship is still on the market, but they can't find a buyer. They haven't a clue what may replace her, but hope that she doesn't leave as aparently she is the ship that everyone prefers to work on, as she is much more intimate and friendly than the rest of the fleet.

I really like the Airtours logo, but on the US with rounded funnels? Ummm...no. It does look fab on the Seawing, like the aircraft owned by Airtours/Premiair/Fly FTi/SkyServiceUSA/Air Belgium etc. But no, not the US.

The United States is more than a rusty old ship. It was once a fine ship. I hope someone buys her.
