I was not aware of this policy, being a "few" years over 25 A young couple bought cruise tickets on Carnival's Paradise. When they got their tickets for the cruise, they found out, that one person at least in a cabin, has to be 25 years of age or older! So, if you are a young married couple , no cruising for a while. I wonder what you all think of this rule? I was surprised the age wasn't 21? I was 18 and my husband 21, on our wedding day. I guess it's lucky we couldn't afford a cruise, then.

That policy was put in place to try to prevent the college breaks taking over the ships. I believe that Carnival is not the only one that put this rule into effect about three years ago after many complaints. There are exceptions to every rule and this, on the surface, would appear to be one.

Our girls were 15 and 18 yet they were allowed to bunk together in a cabin beside us. That was an exception to the rule that at least one peron had to be 21 at the time.

I'm sure that the cruise companies think that it is easier to make exceptions rather than to enforce a rule that is not on the books.

The couple should check carefully; I understand the policy is that they don't have to be 25 if they are married to each other.

CTrail - Your situation was different - the girls were under parental supervision.

It's a hard call. Wonder if the rule/restriction is spelled out in Carnival's brochures and literature - could make a difference.

Mercy, in our day it was unusual to take the honeymoon before the wedding! How times change!

Actually it is spelled out in the brochures very well.

I would have thought that their travel agent would have notified Carnival and cleared the purchase through them before the couple had to actually committed to the cruise.

Maybe they purchased the tickets on the web and not through a travel agent that would be aware of these facts.

If not, fire the agent.

It is ridiculous to make the generalisation that 'all kids are bad for cruises and cannot be trusted to behave' - each person is different. One isolated problem does not justify stereotyping of all teenagers/children. I have encountered teenagers on cruises and never experienced any problems with them, even large groups of them. You seem tarring all children with the same brush, which is not fair. I have experienced more problems with adults (from 25-75 years old) than teenagers!
You have to think of cruise ships as hotels when you're discussing matters like this. Would you believe it fair to ban all under 21s from hotels too? I don't think so.

Just because you encountered problem kids, doesn't mean all kids are as immature and out of control. Be sensible.

Carnivals policy (also RCI) is that if you are under 21 you must be in a cabin with someone at least 25 UNLESS you are married. It is in their brochures.

CTrail - A case for using a reliable Agency -
and reading the brochure...know what you are buying!
Quote - "THE FINE PRINT -
Hughes said he booked with Carnival, the area's largest carrier, through an online travel agency and was not aware of the age policy until he read it in the tickets he was sent."

All teens are not 'bad' but those that are make it hard for the others.

I think the policy should be, if they are married and over twenty one. A lot of couples are married between the age of 21-25. They are missing out on a lot of Honeymoon couples.

I don't believe this should be restricted to married couples. There are many people who don't believe in marriage, and are they to be forbidden from a gret vacation? And what about gay couples etc. the world is not just for those who are married.

And another note to Caronia, try not to start the age debate again. We had that one a while before you joined. LOL.

Paddy.

Wow, Caronia, calm down! I wasn't trying to be patronising, and was simply joking. If you saw the post on "under 18s on cruises", which you might have, you would see what a big topic it is with many different opinions. Don't take it personally.

Paddy.

Mercy - the policy is over 25 UNLESS it is a married couple, so they still have the honeymoon market.

One passenger in the stateroom must be at least 25 years of age. However, Carnival will make exceptions for newlyweds, BUT they must have their marriage license to prove they are indeed newlyweds. This rule is to prevent a bunch of young kids cruising without adult supervision, spring break is a perfect example. Do you really blame the cruise lines for this rule? Think about the problems they must of occured in the past which has pushed them into making this rule. A travel agent would have known these rules.

Caronia, Carnival also states that if you are staying in a hotel in conjunction with a Carnival cruise and you are under 21 you must also be accompanied by someone 25 years or older in the same room.
They are putting this condition on all of their bookings both land and sea.
I'm sure that if one of the couple was under 21 but they went with marriage license in hand, exceptions could be made.
I'm a strong supporter of children and young adults on ships but this is not the question. These are the rules made by the companies knowing full well that these rules would impinge on their income to a certain extent but for other reasons have been forced to make this decision.

Great rule, I'd say. There was a definite reason for the restriction. Some just don't get it. How in the world is the cruise line going to know what kind of a teenager you are? You restrict them all or none.

Mercy - I read the article but it is wrong. I know couples who have cruised on Carnival who are both under 25 but are married and had no problems.

Topic: Couple isn't allowed to cruise, after buying tickets, too young!

Caronia, you may be 18 and doubtless, with your background, conduct yourself in a mature manner. It’s true that one isolated problem does not justify stereotyping – the problem is not isolated – it’s overtaking us.
Coming of age and maturity are not the same thing.
It’s a safe bet that many of your peers belong in the problem group – why not work at impressing them with your code of conduct? Think about Ascendancy’s comment – "How in the world is the cruise line going to know what kind of a teenager you are? You restrict them all or none."
Failing change, all cruise lines will have no option other than to adopt the same policy.
Joe and Jane Public, have the obligation, regardless of destination and mode of travel, to READ, UNDERSTAND and OBEY the FINE PRINT. NOT KNOWING IS NOT A DEFENSE.

I was about to add that newspaper reports are frequently inaccurate – then saw jwine's post. The ‘marriage’ would not have been legal anyway.

Wow, Touchy touchy is right. I did not know of such an age restriction. We are like mercy, both 18 when we married and have been married for 22 years!! We went on our first cruise March break this year and even though we had our two teens with us 18 and 15, we were delighted that the ship was not crowded with unsupervised teens or young adults! Sorry Carolina. I am interested in this article though because our 18 year old son is off to university this fall and will probably not travel with us again. He talked about taking his 19 year old girlfriend on a cruise though so they may be dissappointed with this news. I will be watching this site for the latset on the topic.
