Would like some info about the Crown Princess and the Princess line in general. Is it true that Princess charges extra for some food items? On the Crown, how is the service, food and rooms? Any info would be helpful!
Thanks!!

I've never liked the Crown nor Regal
Princesses......but many others do. I hate
the fact that there is no forward facing
lookout. The cabins are the best of all
the Princess ships. The food and service
are not what they used to be on Princess,
but not bad. Princess is now in the habit
of nickeling and dimeing all pax all day
long. I will no longer travel with them
until these practices are changed.

There are 3 references to Princess/Crown or Regal at this web-site.
Page 2 right here at Cruise Lines.
Page 2 of Cruise Ships (5/15).
Page 4 of Cruise Ships (4/22).

All of the above have several peoples opinions, both good & bad.

I've been on 5 Princess cruises, 2 on the Crown and can't remember them charging extra for ANYTHING that Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, or Norwegian also charge for. ie: Liquor, wine, sodas, mixed drinks. I've heard that they charge for special (Hagen Das) ice cream but I never saw it.

I certainly never saw any charge for any kind of food anyplace!!!!

Tips for waiter's service in "alternative" dining facilities are rightfully expected on all the ships/lines where I've availed myself of that service.

P. S.

The standard non-balcony cabins on the Crown are the largest (199 sq. ft.) of all Princess ships. As a matter of fact they are larger than any non-balcony, non-suite cabin on Celebrity, RCI, or NCL (except Norway and I wouldn't recommend that.)

I have not been on the Crown, but did sail on sister ship Regal and loved it. Cabins were the largest I have ever seen. Have sailed on Princess many times and do not recall them charging for anything that other ships don't charge for other than the ice cream. A friend just sailed on the Crown from Tahiti to Hawaii and really enjoyed it (she had a bad experience with Princess some years ago and has not sailed on them since) but came back with a whole different attitude toward Princess. Also know 7 couples who did a partial Panama Canal cruise this winter on the Crown and raved about her.

As I said earlier, many love the Crown and
Regal Princesses. I do not. I stand by what
I stated earlier.....Princess badgers pax
to spend money all day long....no one has
to buy anything, but being badgered is not
my idea of a good cruise. If only Princess
had learned something from Sitmar when they
bought them out!!

I see from the above replies many disagree
with my opinions, but I report it as I
experience it.

NAL - exactly what do you mean by "Princess badgers passengers all day for money"? Money for what? I certainly have never experienced this. If it's Bingo, horseracing, wine tasting, drinks, they are no different from any other cruise line. If you don't want to participate you have the option not to.

JWINE......

As I stated above......you do not have to
buy anything that you do not wish to buy.
I also said pax are badgered to buy ALL DAY
LONG......with constant announcements made
about this and that for sale, specials on
this and that and the like. The daily
program is FILLED with stuff that is for
sale. We obviously have a very different
idea of what cruising is all about. I also
stated I report it as I experienced it and
if your experiences have been different, I
am happy for you.

I have been on the Crown Princess, and there is a small forward facing open deck that you can view right over the bow, also there are windows that you can view forward from the "Dome" as well, although not as good as on this small deck.

Scottylass.....
Yes, you are right. There is a forward facing
deck on the Crown/Regal Princess....very
small indeed when there are nearly 1600 other
pax who may also want to have a forward view.
The view from the dome is not good and is
also difficult. It has been my experience
that a ship with a large forward-facing
lounge with an outside area adjacent is the
best.....so as to be able to come in and
cool down for a few minutes from the extreme
humidity in Panama and then venture outside
again. To each his/her own.
Happy sailing!

I don't like announcements. Celebrity only has announcments from the captain and the lifeboat drill. When we were on the Vision of the Seas, a couple of weeks ago, they said that their "NEW" policy would be to limit the announcements as well. I have noticed that all the cruise lines I have been on try to sell you things from the very second you arrive. The first pictures before you even get on the ship. They all have T.V channels in the cabin to tell you all about the things you can BUY on the ship and off, in the ports. You just have to tune them out. Like commercials at home. I have been boycotting Princess for us, anyway, because they no longer BOTHER to have midnight buffets. I love to see the artistic creations at a well put together "Grand" Buffet. The best I have seen is on Celebrity's Mercury.

Hi...agree it's nice to have a deck for'd to use, but in fact these days we very rarely bother. Too windy, too many people, too much sun, and so we usually find a deck aft where we can move from side to side where its cooler and more comfortable.
As for midnight buffets, we haven't been to one for 20 years, too close to dinner for one thing, and the 24 hour Bistro on Princess is a much better idea....peter

mercy - RCI doesn't have midnight buffets anymore either. They have the Grand Buffet one evening, but twice that has been cancelled and on the Voyager it wasn't much.

gohaze - I agree, who wants to eat all that stuff after dinner. If you are really starving, you can always order room service. I never thought much of the buffets anyway, I'd rather hit the pizza place.

My children and I cruised on The crown Princess. It was fantastic. It was a coastal cruise so the seas were a little rough but my kids loved dining in the dining room, and particularly liked the kids program. Personally I liked the meals and the service. Forget camping!!!

Hello NAL:

Yes a very valid point, 1600 passengers and one small open deck, however when we were on the ship, for some reason passengers never seemed to find this deck, or either it was too windy, when we were on it there only seemed to be about half a dozen people on it at any one time, and sometimes we had it to ourselves which was nice.

Regards

My wife and I just returned from the Scandinavian/Baltic cruise on the Crown Princess. Our cruise was from May 21-31. We have also sailed on her sister ship, The Regal, several years ago. We throughly enjoyed the ship and service. As stated by several others there were always things to buy but we just passed them by. Never felt that we were "badgered" though. We were approached more in St. Petersburg by vendors than on board. With the exception of bar orders and gambling I am not aware of any additional charges. The Crown was clean, good food and service and a pleasure to sail on.

Scottylass.....

I think you are correct....few find the
forward deck on Crown/Regal Princesses....
except during the Panama Canal trips....for
some reason its existance becomes known. I
agree that it's normally too windy on a fore
deck, but not in the Canal. The ship's
movement is so minimal that barely a breeze
is felt which is actually unfortunate in
the intense heat and humidity of Panama.

I wish you continued happy sailing and look
forward to your contributions to this site.

It really irks me to find the sign up stating "crew only". I think they put this up to discourage early morning and late night trips out onto the deck, and then forget to take it down. One written reply from Princess's LAX office stated that this deck was opened "At the Master's Discretion". Fat lot of good that does, to those that rise earlier than him! Other than the forward outside deck situation, a pretty good vessel, with great cabins.

Hello NAL:

Thank you for your kind words, they are much appreciated.
We are lucky to have a forum such as this so that we can share the passion we have for ships.

Some of us were either too young or just not able to experience the pleasure of sailing on some of the grand liners of old, so its your input and first hand knowledge of these ships which is invaluable to us not so fortunate.

You seem to have a preference for the French ships, maybe you could put in a post like Terry does listing details and your experiences if you have sailed on any of them., I am sure there are many of us would gladly read anything that you had to say on them.

By the way the "Century" has a great forward viewing area, one great memory is cruising into Stockholm past thousands of small islands, it was completely flat calm, sunny skies, about 6.30 am hardly anyone around, it was quite eerie actually at how quiet it was, and how slow the ship was moving.

Cheerio

Scottylass......

I thank you for your kind words as well.
You are correct.....I did love the French
Line.....there was something quite extra-
ordinary about the food, service, and
atmosphere that made them very special. I
was lucky enough to have sailed on Liberte,
Ile-de-France, Flandre, France many times
as a child and later as an adult. I am very
grateful to my parents and grandparents for
the trips while growing up.
I am also a great fan of HAL and believe
they provide the best cruise experience out
there today. Of course it's a very personal
thing and there are as many valid opinions
as cruisers.
The Scandinavian cruises are quite wonderful.
I enjoyed your description of your Stockholm
arrival. I've sailed into Stockholm twice
and missed it both times because of early
arrivals and found we were tied up by 7am.
Continued good sailings!! Any trips soon?

Linda,

I didn't plan to write a review on our trip but, would be pleased to answer specific concerns. There are many good writers (I'm not one) like Scottylass who gave me an excellent email before we left. She was right on track. Since we all have a different view I would prefer responding to individual topics of interest. Ask away and I will express my point of view.

Thankyou NAL and Skyhawk: for your kind comments.

NAL we are due to go off on P&O's ship Aurora in two weeks time, I am counting down the days now. I will be writing a review and will let you know when its done. Hopefully I will try and make a few posts from the ship. Even although it had some misfortune on its maiden cruise, the reports from the people who have cruised on it are saying only good things about it.

NAL Thank you for sharing some of your experiences with us, think about what I said earlier, that there could be a category like was mentioned in another post by Vaccaro.

Skyhawk glad to hear that my review helped you a little whilst on your Baltic Cruise, it is a very good itinerary isnt it...

I envy your Aurora cruise.....I have wanted
to take another P&O cruise for many years,
but that has not been a reality yet. I have
sailed Canberra once and Sea Princess [now
Victoria], but no other P&O ships.
I will be eager to read your review. Have
you sailed the new Oriana so that you'll be
able to compare????

Happy sailing!!!
