What is your opinion of princess cruise lines for an alaska trip??? specifically on the sun princess?? what is opinion of child care, food, rooms, etc...
Anyone signed to go on sun princess on May 29 2000????

Just returned from the Regal Princess. Our first time on Princess in nine years. Compared to our more recent trips on Celebrity and Holand America we thought they came in a very distant third. Service was okay, nothing to write home about, from unmade cabins in the evening to nothing starting on time. Granted this is a pet peave of mine, making people who are on time wait for people who are late on a regular basis. You never could tell how the food in the dining was going to come out - the way you ordered or not even close. At first I thought it was me, but traveling home in the airport I found this eas the case at a number of tables. The entres were always a guess. We found the alternative restaurant served the entre as you ordered it.

We sailed the Regal Princess in April and found it wonderful. Food was always good-hot-correct, etc., cabin and steward were good and so was all the other Princess help we encountered.
Princess is my second choice behind Celebeity and it is a close second. I've sailed them 5 and 3 times respectively.
By the way, Sun Princess is my very favorite ship of all.

Four of our 12 cruises have been on Princess. We've only been disappointed once, and that was aboard the Crown Princess to Alaska. It was the first cruise of the season, and our waiter just wasn't up to the task.

We preferred the food and service on Princess to the one Celebrity cruise we've done. Food is a very subjective point, however.

Princess has the land portion of Alaska down pat. In fact, I believe Princess is something like the 3rd largest employer in all of Alaska. Other cruise lines contract with them for tours, etc.

Holland America (Westours) is also a big presence in Alaska.

Although I've only gotten 3 cruises under my belt at this time, taking the Crown Princess to Alaska in '93 was probably the best. It was this experience that led me to classify Princess as my favorite line to date. The ship was classy (I like my ships to have gentility and dignity to them without being pretentious), the food was good, the cabin was sufficiently roomy, the cruise staff was entertaining and helpful, and the service was top notch, with perhaps one exception in the dining area: our busboy had a penchant for reminding us that he had an impoverished family in the Philippines to whom he allegedly sent a reasonable sum of his earnings on a regular basis; basically, an attempt to pad his tip. This tactic typically has a reverse effect on me. It might be true, but then again, it might not be. Aside from that, I must concur that the tour packages were superior.

I've also sailed on Royal Caribbean and Carnival, but I still like Princess best. I haven't had the opportunity to sail with either Celebrity or Holland America yet, both of which I understand to be excellent lines, and I hope to be able to try both in the relatively near future.

Just another opinion-Each cruise line and every cruise ship have their strengths and weaknesses. What is really important is to determine what the weaknesses are. If they are in an area that does not matter to YOU, (ex. floor shows to those that always skip them) then you have nothing to lose. On the other hand, if the weakness is in an area that hold particular significance to you (food or service), then I would give it a miss. There are those that are passionate about each line and ship (face it-before we invest our time and $ we expect to have a good time), and while it is interesting to read of their feelings, I put more stock in those that voice complaints-particularily in areas that matter to me. I've cruised a fair amount, and have had great cruises on ships and lines that others have panned (Airtour's Sun Cruises), great cruises on some lines that usually receive raves (Holland America, Cunard, P & O)and so-so trips on others that receive raves (Celebrity, NCL). Never a bad one yet! Princess seems to be the line I return to most often, and always disembark fully satisfied knowing that I received more than I had hoped for. Cruising always pleases me, and hopefully you too, bon voyage!
