Hello;
We have narrowed our choice down to 2 ships for the Alaska cruise. HAL Veendam and Princess Regal.
Does anyone have more input they can offer on these ships?
Thank you for your help

My inclination would be to go with the Veendam, she is the newer ship. Their service in fantastic, food the same. You will find older passengers (I dont know your age) on both of these ships. Alaska however does have a bit of a mix of ages but definitely more older people. It is however is breadthtaking cruise, you will love it whichever ship you take.

Go for the Veendam. She is a beautiful ship and as Phil said, newer. With the dome over the pool you can still swim even in Alaska. Have been on her a couple of times and enjoyed it. Bridge officers are British,rather than Dutch, dining room waiters and cabin stewards are Indonesion and bar staff Filipino - all very friendly and smiling. Have a great time. My friend and I are also looking into going to Alaska on the Statendam.
Green - corrected just for you.

My vote is also with HAL - the Veendam is a lovely ship - haven't done Alaska on her but did a wonderful overland tour and cruise on HAL's N. .Amsterdam. Everything went like clockwork - Princess passengers seemed to do a lot of waiting around. If you can swing it, would really recommend including a land tour - Fairbanks, Dawson City, the Yukon - the history of our time - just fascinating!
Incidentally, Veendam Officers are British - just a dig sympatico - two of the Engineers I spoke with were Scottish! :-)

I won't be much help in the HAL vs Princess debate regarding the Alaska cruises mostly because I work extremely closely with both lines and have heard good and bad about each. What I will tell you is to relax. It's not a tough decision like it is in the Caribbean and here's why: The shore excursions, scenery and wildlife are so incredible that the ship will be the last thing on your mind. Just talk to anyone who's done the inside passage from the "Taming the Tongass" (Ketchikan) to the train ride to Denali (from Talkeetna or Anchorage) and what you'll hear is very little about the ship. I'm not saying the Caribbean isn't gorgeous, it's just not as ruggedly diverse. Fact is, we're doing the S. Caribbean in a week, and looking forward to it.

Either way, try to stay healthy up there. Both lines have excellent medical facilities (my nurses work for both lines) and if you do need medevac, it'll probably be one of my Learjets that take you home, but I'd really rather not meet you that way.

Enjoy!

I agree with Gordy - the land portion of my Alaska trip was the SPECIAL part.
