For those people who think Travel Insurance is a waste of money, one of my clients was recently airlifted due to a Heart Attack from Mexico to Canada. We just had the claim verification from the Insurance company come into our office the cost was $23,300.00.

The only trip on which I would and do take travel insurance is a cruise. Anything else you can rebook and loose maybe $50 to rebook your air tickets and one night in a hotel.

On a cruise if you don't get on the ship your money goes down the drain.

As to health insurance it depends upon your plan. I get coverage through work and from my credit card. I travel globally for business.

If you were going to somewhere like Sandals and you had paid for the whole week which could run you into the thousands that would also be lost if you were not insured. All resorts, if not last minute have to be paid 6 weeks in advance but if you bought last minute, paid your money say 5 days before departure and you had a car accident on the way to the airport, without Insurance you would be out of luck. I appreciate you don't need health insurance. What about your baggage, in Canada your house insurance duductable is covered by your travel insurance.

The insurance is a must for cruisers.
Even something as simple as your luggage is covered. When you cruise, every Tom, Dick and Harry is handling your bags. Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't until one or two ports later. If you never use the insurance, count your blessings. At least it's worth the peace of mind of having it.

Travel insurance is great -- but watch out for the old "pre-existing condition" clauses. With some insurance companies if you purchase the insurance at the same time that you make your cruise deposit, pre-existing conditions are waived. If you purchase when you make your final payment, a pre-existing condition is any condition that you may have 60 days prior to buying the insurance. I had to cancel 1 cruise and had to fight with the doctor -- he said it fit the 60 day pre-existing condition rule and I didn't think it did. Luckily, he finally agreed with me so I got my money back. Because I usually bring my elderly parents on the cruise with me, I now purchase the insurance when I book. Not taking any chances.

Theres another thing you have to watch, say you book your vacation 6 months down the road, in the January to go away in July, in February you have a heart attack but the doctor says youre doing great you will be fine to go away in July. In June you have another heart attach, you are not insured. After the February one you must cancel your vacation and wait to rebook. We just found this out from Voyageur Insurance in Canada.

Hi...in Canada one of the best bets for travel insurance is the Gold/Platinum Visa at your bank. You don't have to worry about pre-conditions then. We've had it and used it for years.

Hi Phil...Gold cards are pretty easy to get these days, and the point is that you pay the premium once a for the year and can use it as many times as you want providing of course that you charge your trip to the card. If you do any amount of travelling it's well worth it.

CHECK your Credit Card Travel Insurance coverage – it may not INCLUDE WHAT YOU REALLY NEED.
I've just checked up on my Aerogold with CIBC (Canada) – $120.00 per year – One Aeroplan mile for each $ spent – commission free Travellers cheques - $500,000 Common Carrier Accident Insurance. There is NO COVERAGE for TRIP CANCELLATION/INTERRUPTION – I venture to say that very few people can afford to travel without that protection.. Accidents do happen and you could break a leg, or worse, on your way to the airport - right then you’ve lost the entire cost of your vacation. Medical Insurance with my card is an option (at extra cost, of course). Canadians are very conscious of the fact that we must have Out of Country Medical Insurance – preferably unlimited as to amount.

Being Canadian I thoroughly agree with you. Trip cancellation is very important. On one of the Bulletin Boards someone with a Royal Bank card said he was covered for everything, I dont think he was, most Canadian Banks seem to have the same kind of coverage. That is honestly why most people buy Voyageur Insurance, they feel really safe. This was on Cruise@addicts and he got really nasty about it and accused agents of just making money because we get commission on Insurance.

As I said above the ROYAL Bank coverage on Gold/Platinum -which is C$120 a year plus $30 for a co-applicant does cover Trip Cancellation and Trip INTERRUPTION. The Travel Health applies if you are under 65 but then there is another RBC one you can use and its charged at a daily rate - the last time I looked at Voyaguer there was a minimum. Looks like some TAs should do some checking for their own benefit.

Just noticed that the Phyllis that started this topic looks very much like the TA 'Diana' from Toronto who is a newbie on the other BBs and who you are referring to. Similar wording and the E-mail is diana@home.???
Is somebody playing little games??

I was the one that started the Travel Insurance comment and it honestly was because I just felt it would be of interest, definitely not to cause trouble. I was registered under Phyllis that just happens to be my second name because I could not register under the name Diana (obviously there is another one registered). I am not Phil or Andrew, never have been and never will be!!!I suddenly realized if I tried putting another letter after my name it my take and it has, so no need to be Sherlock Holmes any more. I have said nothing unpleasant to you people so perhaps you could cool it. Thanks very much.

Diana D/Phyllis: You brought up a very vital issue, and I don't care if you're a travel agent, kindergarten teacher or ladies room attendant. I don't think that most people consider some of the situations that can not only ruin your cruise, but also leave you in staggering debt. Your post probably made lots of people think, and maybe saved some poor soul a fortune.

‘Vital issues’ (in the eyes of the poster) are what this forum is all about – we’re all looking for information, opinions and guidance on various cruise lines, best deals, booking tips, etc. etc. Those of us fortunate enough to have cruised many times can and do willingly share our knowledge – when in doubt, we ask questions. I personally welcome TA tips…….it’s the one ‘professional’ group who still don’t charge for advice! What we don’t need are travel agency owners/franchise holders plugging their agencies under the guise of ‘cruisers’.

I do own an Agency. I told the story about the person because it was a group booking and we were on the same cruise and had had dinner with this client the night before. He was heating into dinner 10 mins before the ship was to depart when he had chest pains, went down to the Dr. who immediately sent his wife with a member of staff to pack and had him sent to the hospital where the following day he was airlifted back to Toronto. I found out about this two days later when my daughter called (she is our Manager) to ask if we could find the clients formal pictures, which of course we did. I felt that to tell this story would perhaps get someone who didnt usually buy insurance on the premise that they had never had any need for it, would think twice. The comments about Visa were really not necessary as obviously the person who is convered dosn't need to worry however the person who dosn't have that type of card should. By the way we have to offer insurance to all our clients (TICO insists on this) and if they decline it we have to put it on the Invoice, otherwise we can be accused of not offering it and could end up in Court. Perhaps having said this we can now stop all the unpleasantness and help each other rather than be nasty.

Diana Phyllis despite your remarks you really don't give up do you. I brought up the Visa insurance - which you wrongly disputed and now say is not necessary. Obviously, as you don't make commission on that you denigrated it without knowing how good it is. FYI I have had several people ask me for more details.

Hold on guys, this is starting to sound like a pissing match.

Dianna, you have brought up a valid point and you have not tried to sell your agency at all. Incidents like this have to be spoken about in forums like these so that everyone will become aware of the necessity of travel insurance both for the trip and associated costs and the medical side.

I fully agree with you that if you already have insurance through some carrier that will provide the appropriate coverage then that is fine but if you don't, spend the extra hundred or so and get full coverage.

True story
Unfortunately, a little five year old boy didn't get to go home yesterday and will never be held in his mothers arms again. You just never know what or when misfortune can befall you.

Good post DiannaD

Life is so precious, we found that out when our 8 month old grandson was diagnosed with Cancer, fortunately they were wrong.
I sincerely hope the child you mentioned was not one of your family.
