We're sailing from Los Angeles in January and will be flying in the day before. Can anyone recommend a good hotel at or near the LA airport. I prefer not to go through the cruise line for pre-cruise, because in the past I've found them to be more expensive than making our own arrangements.

The airport Hilton is very nice and it is close. They also have a shuttle to the airport.

I have recently stayed at the WESTIN AT LAX
- no complaints. You can book it on the Internet. I got there earlier in the day, i.e. before the official check-in time, and they gave me a room anyway, which - after a 13hour-flight was most welcome. They run a regular shuttle too.

We stayed at Holiday Inn San Pedro 1 mile from LA Harbor last May. They have a fly and cruise package that is very reasonable where they will provide transportation to and from LAX and to ship and hotel room. Within walking distance to Ports O Call with lots of interesting (but not fancy) outdoor and fast food seafood restaurants rignt on the harbor and a few not too interesting shops. It makes for a relaxing transition from flying in day early, as we did, then only five minutes from ship next morning. Check out their web site at www.holidayinnsanpedro.com for all the details. Happy sailing!

Two years ago we stayed at the Sheraton in Long Beach and then took a cab to San Pedro port. There were lots of restaurants to walk to and an open air market. Very nice. (Friends drove us down from LAX, so don't know what the cost of a taxi or shuttle would be, but check with the hotel.)
"rearchitect" - I was very surprised when you said there were lots of seafood restaurants at Ports of Call. When we were there over 6 years ago the place was bustling with great shops and restaurants and we had lunch outside at the Ports of Call restaurant on the harbour. It was a very busy place. However when we were there 2 years ago this restaurant and many others were gone, over half the shops were closed and the place was looking very depressed - almost like a ghost town. Have they built it back up?
It used to be a wonderful place to go to and just walk around and shop.

Depending upon your budget or if you work for a large corporation and can get a corporate rate the Ritz Carleton at Marina del Ray is a superb hotel. (On a good day my company gets a rate of like $159.00). Its is about 7-10 minutes from LAX.

A couple of blocks away is the Marriot at Marina del Ray which is also a very nice hotel and the same distance from the airport.

Bill

P.S. You might try priceline.com to see what you can get for a rate. (I've never doen it but seems like a perfect time to try it.)
