Us British often regard Americans as better buisness 'men' than ourselves! A brand new liner will obviously help Cunard expand. I think that Cunard's style may change a little in the future to a more populist cruise line? Some folks will see this as positive, some as negative!

I think Carnival is going in the right direction by bring back the historic ship names and image of Cunard as a fast and luxurious way of travel. Obviously they are committing a lot of money and resources to make Cunard the premier ship line it use to be.

I hope they keep it up.

Cunard has definitely had it's struggles over the past 15 years or so / mostly I believe they have had an identity problem. There was too much confusion among the management as to what direction to take Cunard. I don't understand how it could be so difficult, make it the best possible luxury cruise service, maintain the upkeep of the ships to be as spotless as possible, and fine-tune the services onboard - how difficult could it be? But for some reason, Cunard did struggle with this issue of identity. Now I think they are diffinitely moving in the right direction - they just needed some top-notch leadership to take the ball and direct them in the right direction.

Considering Carnival's business savvy, and the fact that they more or less allow their subsidiary products to remain autonomous to a degree, I think that this is a deal where both sides will benefit tremendously. Certainly, having a good management team will help, and Carnival has one of the best in the business. The proof is everywhere. Just look at Holland America, Carnival's other upscale line. They have prospered well under Carnival's ownership.

I think that Cunard are moving in the right direction. They are a separate entity under the unbrella of The Cunard Line. Rationalisation has occurred with the smaller ships moving to the Seabourn fleet. A substantial refit of the QE2 and the building of the Queen Mary Project under the direction of people who have a proven track record. The company is going to capitalise on the wonderful era of cruising earlier this century without trying to "live in the past."I think that Cunard will remain "British" while Seabourn will continue in its Scandanavian style of service.

Time will tell but I have great faith in Cunard and its future as "Queen of the Seas."

When Carnival took over HAL I happened to be on the Westerdam. What a shock it was. The morale was so low among passengers and crew that HAL flew in a group of executives to quell the rumours that HAL would change. It was very upsetting to say the least. The first few years we did see the Carnival influence creeping in, especially when they let Joe Farkas do the interior designing on a few rooms on the Statendam. They had to redo these rooms as HAL Alumni raised a big stink.
Cunard probably will grow and change for the better. The Statendam class ships are great with the verandahs, etc. and are always full. Carnival will probably build larger Cunard ships for an upscale clientelle just as they have done with HAL, who couldn't have lasted under private ownership.

We sailed on QE2 on the July 4th cruise and had a wonderful time. Service was excellent.

It is clear that Carnival is committed to creating a variety of cruise experiences for different travelers. In buying Cundard they clearly wanted the Cunard brand - a clearly British cruise experience with all the tradition of Cunard/White Star. The actions they have taken thus fare reinforce that. Renaming Vistafiord as Caronia and refocusing it as a British experience. Transferring the
two Godesses and Royal Viking Sun to Seaborne.
Its tough to reconcile the pre-Carnival Cunard which had one British ship and 4 Scandinavian ships - with the Cundard of old.

Carnival brings management and marketing skills including how to build a brand, plus the financial resources to make it happen.
