Has anyone cruised on board the German Club ship AIDA. If so I would be interested in their comments of the cruise experience and the ship.

Have been once onboard the AIDA. This ship is a very special case, either you like it or you don´t. I wouldn´t recommend it for first cruisers because they might get either such a fantastic impression of this Club-concept and then would be disappointed when they later book with another line which is offering the classic cruise style. Or they would be disapointed from this style of cruising and might never ever book a cruise again because they might think every ship is the same like AIDA.
Well, the concept of this ship is that it goes away from all the classic cruise traditions. It is working like a Club. There won´t be any captain´s dinner, there´s no table reservation since all, except one dining room are buffet-style (the exception is 1 dining room where you can´t stay more than 3 times during the cruise since there wouldn´t be enough place to carry every passenger). The showlounge has seasts without a backrest which is meant that passengers have to participate in the show-program. The day over there´s plenty activity on the whole ship (sports, music, theatre, BBQ-parties and so on) and all is meant to participate. The AIDA features by the way the largest open-air-disco with laser show ever been installed on a cruise ship.
The excursions are organized by the ship-own scouts who will lead you through the places you go. Often this includes a lot of walking.
The inside style of the ship (maybe a little bit simular to the Carnival vessels) shows you straightly that there is a very leisurly ambiance but still with a kind of style.
Service is very friendly and the food is of a very good quality too.
In Germany, people were first quite sceptic about this concept but like it is now, it is very well established on the German market.
The ship, now owned by Deutsche Seetouristik again (which is part of the P&O group now), is cruising with mainly German passengers.

What was it that NCL gained by owning this ship? They never sailed or operated her.

The AIDA was ordered and taken over by Deutsche Seetouristik, Rostock originally. But the new concept did not establish easily at the beginning and to not go into a too big risk, Deutsche Seetouristik sold the vessel to NCL but with this sale they also signed a bareboat charter contract for undetermined period. Therefore the ship was never operated by NCL and since after a few month, the club-concept started to be well liked in Germany, it was almost sure that the AIDA would never sail under NCL management.
Now, since P&O is owning Deutsche Seetouristik, the ship will remain definitely on the German market and the new parent company Aida Cruises Ltd. has already ordered 2 more vessels at Germany´s Meyer Yard.
