Be prepared for the high cost of the excursions!

Prepare yourself for a bit of an anticlimax towards the end of your trip. It is much better to go Northbound, as the landscape gets more exciting every day - due to the snow level usually not much at Ketchikan and ever increasing after that, culminating in the fjords. If you see all the good stuff to start with you might be disappointed with the later ports of call - but don't be, they are still worth it !

We just took the Jubilee to Alaska and back. We will NEVER sail with Carnival again! The food was lousey, the service non-existant and when we did get service, the servers were frequently surly or even rude.
The entertainment was wretched. And yes, the off shore excursions are expensive but well worth it! Especially the Train in Skaguay. Hope your experience is better than ours was.

And, watch out for MSG in the food. They give you no warnings that it is used. (It makes me sick so I can spot it right away.)
CHEERS!

So sorry to hear that you had such a wretched trip on Carnival. I'm positive that that is not the norm. I certainly hope that you let Carnival know of your displeasure and be specific about the circumstances, if possible with names. About the msg, I understand that the effects can be terrible for some people but the only signs I have ever seen are signs that state "No MSG used in our food". If this sign isn't about then I know a few of people who won't eat in that establishment or say that they specifically ask about every course because there is so much of it used these days.
Did you let Carnival know about your special needs re. diet. I know that in their brochures they request that you or your travel agent let them know about any special dietary needs at least two weeks before sailing. They also say that you should discuss the method of preparation with both your waiter and the headwaiter.
About the servers, did you discuss this with the headwaiter or maitre d'. I know that ours was always asking about the service as he walked around during dinner and when he greeted you as you entered and left the dining room. One word from him and it seemed that the waiter might be banished to the bowels of the ship.

Sorryaboutthebadcruise :-)

Pam how was your cruise, not the same I hope. Please let us know.

Here'stocruisin' :-)

The helicoper glacier landing is very expensive, but you must do it anyway. Even if this is the only excursion you do. The train trip in Skagway is beautiful, but all of Alaska is beautiful. The helipcopter glacier landing is a wonderful thrill, and unlike anything else you will do. We're readly to go back. Northbound or Southbound, it doesn't matter because it is all beautiful. You will have a wonderful time, I have no doubt.
