I HAVE A LITTLE WARNING FOR ANYONE WHO IS DIABETIC AND IS THINKING ABOUT GETTING ON A CARNIVAL SHIP.

I ADVISED OF MY DIABETIS WHEN I MADE MY RESERVATION. I RECIEVED A CALL FROM THE MEDICAL DESK AND WE DISCUSSED THE SITUATION. I WAS ADVISED THAT IF I HAD ANY PROBLEMS TO LET A CARNIVAL REPRESENITIVE KNOW ASAP.

I DID HAVE PROBLEMS ON THE SHIP AND CARNIVAL DID NOT RESPOND TO MY NEEDS. BECAUSE OF THIS I REQUESTED TO GET OFF THE SHIP AND UTILIZE THE VACATION GARENTEE. THIS REQUEST WAS REJECTED AND I HAD TO STAY ON THE SHIP.

BE VERY AWARE OF THIS IF YOU PLAN TO TAKE A CARNIVAL CRUISE. IF THEY REFUSE TO HANDLE A MEDICAL SITUATION, I WOULD HATE TO SEE HOW THEY WOULD HANDLE SOMETHING LESS SEVERE.

BE AWARE!

Rusty--
I hope this was your first cruise and that
you will give cruising another chance.
I am a Type II diabetic (non-insulin) who
have been on 5 cruises, including
Carnival's Sensation. My husband and
I are booked on Carnival's Jubilee in
March 1999. Can you tell me exactly
what the problems were?? Was it the
food, your medication needs, insulin
supply, etc.??? In the meantime I can
give you a few tips if you're interested--
Always get a written note from your
doctor explaining the blood glucose
monitor (so customs won't think it's a
bomb!), your medication (in case you need
an emergency refill in port). Then as far as
food is concerned, just follow whatever
you do in any resturant-- sauces on the
side, eat in moderation, avoid desserts
with a high sugar content, etc. Use your
blood glucose monitor more often before
and after meals to keep things under
control. Use the gym on board ship--
exercise! Take walking tours in port (be
sure to take along a snack!) You can
have a wonderful time on any ship-- I
have known many fellow diabetics, insulin
and non-insulin dependent have a great
time on cruises and traveling.
But please don't generalize and say that
Carnival is bad for ALL diabetics--
obviously it's not. If you have any
questions about traveling with diabetes,
let me know-- I'll be happy to answer
them for you. Signed Janice (by the way
I'm not only diabetic, but I am also deaf!)

The food on the ship was fine. I was able to select the good from the
bad and had no problems controlling my diet.

My main concern was that I was told that I would be able to get onto
the ship around 12 noon and to let Carnival know if I had any problems.
My diet requires that I do eat a balanced lunch each day between 11:30
and 12:30. I was told this would be "No Problem".

The ship was not ready on time. At noon I went to a Carnival employee
and told them that I was concerned and that I would need to rectify the
issue as soon as possible. The employee laughed at me, told me to wait
with everyone else, and walked away. When I attempted to stress the
importance of the issue, She became very upset with me.

Carnival allowed a wedding party on the ship at 12:05 pm. I was very
concerned and almost refused to get on the ship.

I was able to board at 1:35 pm and no one did anything to assist with my
bags and was handed a map of the ship when I advised another employee of
the situation. He just pointed towards the Lido Deck.

At this point the only concern was my health. I needed to get food into
my system right away. I really felt horrible.

After the ship left the port I had requested to use the Vacation
Guarantee. This is Carnivals policy which states that if a guest is
unhappy for any reason, he my get off the ship for any reason at the
next port. No questions asked. Carnival declined my request. I did
not feel that my safety and health problems were a concern.

I wrote Carnival a letter and they did not seem very concerned about the
situation.

They will really have to do a lot to improve before I get on another
ship. Let me point out that no one even bothered to tell me where I
could find or even call a doctor.

HANKS AGAIN FOR THE RESPONSE.

The problem was not that I appeared a little drunk. I do not experience
this very often. If anything I appeared weak and low on energy. Almost
like a bad flu.

The ending result was that Carnival made some commitments to me that
they were unable to keep. Because of this they made the choice to risk
my health condition. Carnival did nothing to put me in touch with the
ship medical staff and NO ONE responded to the situation correctly.

They also did not allow me to utilize the vacation guarantee. I asked
for this 12 hours before we arrived at the 1st port. This was a
violation of our contract agreement.

I have turned the situation over to my attorney today. It would take a
lot for me to get back on a ship again.

I wanted to respond to another portion of your letter.

If a some one has a special diet due to a medical condition, why should
a cruise line be concerned at all about food in the room, in carry ones
or any where else? The guest has a medical condition that needs to be
addressed.

When I walk up to a Carnival employees and say " I need you help. I am
diabetic and I am having some problems". Why do they not try to assist
me or get me some medical attention. I am sweating, weak, pale, tired,
and requesting help. No one did a thing for over 1 1/2 hours. It only
got worse.

I can not eat snacks and sodas and expect everything to be ok soon. I
am required to be on a restricted diet at selective times. I need
balanced meals. The medical staff advised NO PROBLEM when making the
reservation.

Rusty, if your diabetes is such that you absolutely need to eat at certain times, then you should NEVER rely on someone or something else to address this need. My friend, who is an insulin-dependent diabetic ALWAYS carries some food with her if she is away from home at mealtimes, just in case she is unable to eat where she expects to eat. She'll often be able to throw away her "picnic lunch", but it's good security. Whenever there is a large crowd of people needing to be somewhere, on a large conveyance, never expect things to be "on time"!
Maybe they didn't respond as you'd like...but you need to take better care of yourself!
I'm a disabled person, myself; I don't expect the cruise line to know what I need to enjoy my trip with them. I take care of it myself.

Ann,

Thanks for your reply. I did eat breckfest and felt no need to worry. Carnival insured me that it would be "No Problem". I thought I could trust them. I thought they would be much more professional.

Carnival was notified of a medical problem that did nothing but escalate. They offered no response after requesting assistence 2 times. No concern was displayed. They never notified medical staff of the situation and I did handle the situation alone. They offered no assistence.

The rest of the trip was fine. I had no trouble getting the proper food when needed.

Please understand that the only problem I had was that the medical desk documented the medical condition on the reservation and advised that all I had to do was to contact a Carnival employee. "No Problem".

It is unfortunate that "No Problem" ment that Carnival had seen this situation as "No Problem".

Rusty, I have to agree with Ann-- I know
many personal friends of mine who are
diabetics have cruised with no problems
providing that they are prepared for
any situation-- always have food and
a high glucose snack, medication and
your blood glucose monitor on hand.
If your medical condition is so urgent
why didn't you have a representative
call 911? Anybody, even the person
standing next to you could have dialed
911 for you-- it's free on all pay phones!
But it is wrong to say that Carnival is
bad for anyone, because that it simply
not true. Thousands of passengers
with chronic diseases and disabilities
have cruised successfully-- I see them
on board, have talked to them, and even
read their comments on many internet
bulletin boards. I have never ever let
my diabetes, bad knees, and deafness
stop me from doing what I love to do--
traveling and cruising. Further, since
you said the rest of the cruise was fine,
how can you possibly win a case?? If
you were really unhappy, you could have
gotten off at the first port-- that is when
the vacation guarantee kicks in! It does
not kick in before you sail and you are
already on the ship! I rest my case.

Rusty has a valid complaint. He was in a serious situation and the staff was indifferent to it. Maybe he should have been more prepared. Or maybe he or his companion should have been more assertive. But the bottom line is, there was an emergency situation and Carnival didn't care.

I have sailed Carnival and would do so again, but I can't justify how they handled this passenger. Rusty, I hope you got the names of the people that treated you so badly. As for the vacation guarantee, how can Carnival refuse to honor that? When a service industry fails in its commitment, a consumer has the right to complain. If Carnival can't respond better to medical needs, the next passenger might die because of it. Carnival should make some attempt at making amends to Rusty.

ANN AND JANICE,

You are forgetting some very importent issues in my case.

1 Carnival was advised of a medical situation. I advised them of the urgency and was very persistent. I asked for help and assistence was refused. No one called medical staff or even advised where I could find the medical office.

2 I requested to get off the ship. My request was declined. With out them honering the Vacation Garentee, I was stuck in the Bahamas. I had no chice but to stay on the ship. The policy for the garentee is that if a guest is not happy, for any reason, he may get off the ship with a refund at the first port. I had asked 12 hours before arriving and this was declined. No reason was provided and no paper work was completed.

3 Carnival was made aware of a medical condition and the medical desk had called me about it. I was told what I had to do if I did have any problems. I followed the instructions and nothing was done. The medical desk had documented it very well.

I do not see how your comments have anything to do with my case. Walk a mile in my shoes, recieve the response that i did, have Carnival neglet your health condition, request help 2 times, recieve no response. After that I would love to hear how you feel about my case.

It does not appear that this case will even go to court. I have some very good people assisting me and I believe that Carnival will eventually be held accountable for the response.

GOOD NEWS JANICE AND ANN!

Carnival has agreed to resolve my case with out going into the court
room. I am very impressed with the speed to get this taken care of
quickly.

Carnival has issued a letter regarding the incidents that took place on
the ship. I did receive a copy by fax today and they assumed full
responsibility for the problems.

The main issues that were addressed were:

NO ONE WITH CARNIVAL RESPONDED TO MY MEDICAL
SITUATION AFTER REQUESTING HELP 2X. NO MEDICAL STAFF
WAS NOTIFIED.

THE VACATION GUARANTEE WAS DECLINED. CARNIVAL WAS
ADVISED OF THE REQUEST 12 HOURS BEFORE ARRIVING AT
THE FIRST PORT. NO PAPER WORK WAS COMPLETED.

THE MEDICAL DESK HAD DOCUMENTED THE TELEPHONE
CONVERSATIONS WITH THEM VERY WELL. ALL
INFORMATION WAS ON THE RESERVATION. NO ONE CHOOSE
TO REVIEW IT WHEN PROBLEMS OCCURRED.

Again, BE AWARE!

Make sure that Carnival is following your medical situation and
responding correctly. I am sure that this case will be a good lesson and
training tool.
