She looks great....like she did when I cruised on her as Rembrandt. It would be fun to see what they've done to her.

They have done a great job remodelling the Grande Dame.

What the narrator called the Grand Ballroom was the Ritz Carlton. We spent many hours in both the Ambassador Lounge and Ritz Carlton.

I see they have removed the showers from beside the pool.

I would love to see her again - did spend many, many days/hours sailing on this beautiful ship - but doubt I will ever get to Holland for a visit.

I love the video Ben, she's just as beautiful as she was when Tony and I sailed her as the REMBRANDT on Jan. 2, 2000. I wish I were on my way right now.

Absolutely stunning. As Ernie said, where can I book a cruise? (OK, I know where I can book a stay on board - and I certainly plan to - but there is a slight bittersweet effect to seeing her look so beautiful while knowing she will never sail again.)

I doubt there will be any other liner accorded this financially ruinous treatment, but if it could only happen to one, this is one that deserved it.

I was surprised by the detail of the Restoration, the furniture in the Ritz Carlton have the same light fabrics and the carpet is once again red. This is exactly as build. I know that the static wall art was restored by prime Italian art specialist coming from Italian museums. I cannot wait to see here in real. And spent a view nights on board, strolling here decks, maybe some kisses at the railing overlooking the Maas river. Although she never sail, she's reel and touchable.

She's the fabulous TSS ROTTERDAM Ruling Grand dame supreme.

Greetings Ben.

Kiss the railing? Oh boy, Ben you've lost it. I love ships, but kissing the ship is a little over the edge.

I did when she was Rembrandt. Still my best cruise ever nearly a decade and about 10 cruises later. No other ship comes close in grace, quality of design, and that magical "unquantifiable feel".

Watching the video posted above and seeing her in seemingly good condition was a huge relief. Thanks for posting the link.

BTW - calm down guys - Ben wrote about kisses AT the railing not kissing the railing. However, it would not be that bad since there are certainly crazier things one could do than kissing the railing.

Inhabitants of Katendrecht will have the opportunity to see their new neighbour on 28, 29 and 30 December 2009.
Members of the Association De Lijn (former HAL employees) will receive an invitation for a visit on 31 January 2010.
As per 15 February 2010, the s.s. Rotterdam will be open to the public.

It has been a very long wait.

Thanks Ben. Both videos are fantastic. You will need to tell us if the multi-colored carpet in the first class smoking room has been restored. The Queen's Lounge [former tourist class lounge] looks as it did originally. After your trip a/b I am sure you will have much to tell us. Thanks again, Ben.

After looking at the second video, I noticed the chairs in the Queen's Lounge are mostly beige. If I remember correctly, these were originally a rose color. I see there are some rose colored chairs, but I think they were all rose. It is amazing to see that the chairs in the Ambassador, the Ritz-Carlton, and the Queen's lounge are the same ones from when she was first in service. To last 50 years they must have been very well built! I noticed that the stateroom chairs are the same as well with the exception of the one in front of the desk. That one looks to be a chair from one of the two dining rooms. Ben, have the dining rooms been restored?

For a long time they had a complete furniture repair shop onboard that repaired and recoverd the furniture as needed. It was quite an operation.

When the front wheel of the stoller we were using to cart our two small children around Alaska broke our steward took it to the repair shop and a couple of hours later we had it back with the front wheel welded back in place as good as new.

Below decks they had a complete tailor shop where they made all the uniforms for crew members on board and also for other ships. If you needed something altered or repaired, not problem.

In the stern, right above where the rudder was attached they had a supply of toilets and sinks - all original - because they couldn't get the same style anymore.

As impressive as she was/is in the public rooms, behind the scenes she was equally impressive and the crew on board were incredibly proud of the ship.

I will try to find photos from behind the scenes.

Her interiors are full of inside jokes about Dutch culture. The ship is not only a collection of great rooms but an incredible editing job of the design director in placing what theme where and the little surprises along the way.

The Ritz Carlton mural and balcony rail tell a story as you traverse it. The ceiling as you walk in was supposed to be what the fish would see from in the ocean looking up.

The Ambassador Lounge is a poem of circles and stars. Its theme was a monument to the nuclear age.

Queens Lounge is a great space with random focal points where strong geometry would be oppressive.

My favorite outdoor space is the Skyroom top deck.

I wish the Cafe de la Paix and the space age room on the starboard promenade deck: was offices was still there. They were a delight in photos and must have been fantastic in real life.

Thanks, Ben, for the third video. Surely it was a cold day. Another observation from the second video, As I remember the balcony of the Ritz-Carlton had originally green chairs....a soft, medium green. Many would have said "avocado" green. There may have been some of these green chairs downstairs too, but I remember them on the balcony. Anyone else remember them? That was interesting about the repair shop, Joe. I had heard of it, but didn't know it included sinks and toilets too.....makes sense.
