I finally had some old video footage converted to share on Youtube of the SS Norway. Here's a clip from when a buddy of mine and I climbed up inside the mast of the Norway during a cruise in 1990.

That is sooooooooooooooooooo way kewlio, I wished I had done that on one of my 3 cruises on the ship. What a great way to get photos. Love the video Barry.

I'm curious how you were able to convince NCL to grant you access to the mast and the engine room...

When you worked on cruise ships like I did, you know who to talk to. I also have a long interview with the Captain of the Norway at the time. Perhaps I'll share the audio to that interview.

Hmmm, not a good thing to be in front of that radar antenna. Not sure what the power rating is on this type radar but microwave is not a good thing to be
so close to.

The rotating antenna on the video is an X-Band array ( 9 GHz ). The power ratings for a commercial X-Band radar is normally between 10 and 25 KW. The Norway would definitely have had a 25 KW transciever. I agree, NOT a good idea to stand in front of the antenna. The outgoing RF is concentrated in the center of the antenna and if you are located within about 3 meters from the antenna, you could get seriously hurt.
I would also certainly discourage anyone from trying to climb up a radar mast on a moving ship without any safety harnesses.
