The glamorous days of commercial air travel. Of course it was out of the reach of the vast majority of travelers but it certainly looked exciting and new! 6-1/2 hours in 1958 and 6-1/2 hours in 2011.

Interesting promo film from Pan Am. This type of promo was common fare at the movies in the 1950's. However, it has been mislabeled because it's definitely not from 1954. The 707 did not go into commercial service until 1958 and the early 707s could not fly non-stop across the Atlantic.

1954 was the year that Pan Am started planning their non-stop jet flights across the Atlantic. The Boeing prototype for the 707 first flew in July 1954. Its official designation was the B357-80 or "Dash 80". But it was labelled Boeing 707 in the July 1954 issue of Time Magazine that covered the first flight. However, the actual 707s were significantly longer and wider than the Dash 80 due to the demands of Juan Trippe at Pan Am. (Years later Juan Trippe was also the driving force behind the 747).

What I found interesting in the film was the appearance of the P&W JT3C turbojet engines in the film. There have been many claims from internet "know it alls" that the producers of the ABC TV series "Pan Am" have used the wrong engines on their 707 models, but this film shows that the producers have actually got it right. The JT3C engines did have the strange looking (by today's standards) exhausts shown in the TV series.

The turbojets later gave way to the more fuel-efficient turbofan engines such as the Rolls Royce Conway (the first turbofan aka bypass engine) and the P&W JT3D.

Thanks for posting this film, Joe.

Additional Info: This film was produced, a few months before Pan Am received their first 707-320 Intercontinental, in anticipation of the introduction of non-stop flights to London and Paris. The plane shown in the film is actually a 707-120 called `Clipper Maria`with registration N707PA.

That's what I thought when I watched the first episode of the TV show because when we flew to Brazil in 1968 onboard a PanAm 707 it had the engines with the covered exhausts. I also do not remember the little lounge area but maybe that was for first class. I am sure that the producers used this video as part of their research.

When I watched the first episode of Pan Am I wasn't sure what the engines should have looked like because I had never seen a P&W turbojet engine. My only flight on a 707 was in 1963 (Friday Sept 13). It was a BOAC flight from London to Montreal and it was equipped with Rolls Royce Conway turbofan engines. Between then and 1986 all of my flights were on Canadian airlines that flew DC-8s rather than 707s and the DC-8s that I flew on were all stretched versions that used P&W turbofans. And the wide body planes like the L-1011 and 747 never used turbojets.

So, the TV series does have some "educational" value.

Brian

P.S. In 1963 I would have preferred to return to Canada by sea, but there wasn't enough time available to do so.
