I can't believe it's been 10 years since all the hype surrounding Y2K and our entrance into the year 2000. In spite of banks and computer firms restructuring their dating systems to 4 digits, remember all the doomsayers who practically predicted the downfall of Western civilization?

I even knew someone who quit her job at my office, sold off all her assets, converted them into gold, and was going to live in a bunker down in Costa Rica, to prepare for the worst. Never did hear from her again, probably killed by a poisonous snake or another survivalist!

The press and governments seem to jump on these types of stories every 5-10-years then they go away. When my granparents were alive, they would joke about all 'doomsday' stories they heard over their long lifetimes. I remember the first Earthday in 1970 when I was kid. It was predicted that we would all be frozen by now and I guess if you live in the US mid-west and east coat today, you are!

what you have to remember is that many in the technology world really didn't know what was going to happen on january 1

i worked for a major atm manufacturer at the time as a field technician and under threat of termination we were all ordered.

no vacations at all after december 21st

all technicians and managers will have all pagers, and cell phones on (even if not on schedule)
december 31st and january 1st
and will be prepaired to respond to any problems that may occur.

(although looking back if the cars didn't start, and the computer infrustructure collapsed you wouldn't be able to do much anyway)

but like you said they did make a ton of money running around the last six months of that year doing atm software upgrades, and security patches

i made sure i was at home by midnight, watching the ball (gun loaded) waiting for the power to go off

The world didn't grind to a halt because the techie world took the potential problem seriously. And, in part, the techie world took the potential problem seriously because there was a lot of buzz generated about the possible severity of the difficulties if the potential problem was not taken seriously. (Or, to be fair, the techie world was allowed to take it seriously by those who held the purse-strings.)
