Joe,
What is the deal with CT lately? It seems the site is down so much lately. A few weeks back it was down almost the entire weekend, and lately it seems I often get a no server response when I try to access the site.

Today it was down for several hours and appears to have returned, for now.

Are there major issues going on behind the scenes? I'm concerned one day it will crash and be gone for good. That would be disappointing as CT is my favorite cruise message board by far.

Ernie,

It was down for a while earlier this evening because we had to do some work on the server.

The software that it runs on has been having issues lately that can make it unresponsive at times. We are looking at alternatives but he biggest issues is how do we preserve and migrate the history.

CT is not going away anytime soon. We just need to figure out a workable migration strategy. Hopefully that will happen within the next couple of months.

Thanks for the explanation Joe. I appreciate it. I'm glad to hear everything is ok. I was getting concerned.

Indeed THANKS. I was going to post a concern a while back but figured it would be interpreted as impatience. Sometimes I only have a small window of opportunity to check out postings over any given 5 day period and its tough to catch up on all the great 'news and opinions'. It just always seemed that during that window the site would be down.

I even check out CT before I check anything else because I can use my internet phone while at work for everything else (I cant get CT on my phone). CT is #1 on my computer 'Favorites List'.

I'm like you. Usually during the week I don't have a lot of time to post. I'm just too busy with work and life, but I do like to read CT each day. Lately it seems more often than not the times I want to read it, the site is down. I do have more time on the weekends to post, and I've noticed the site has been down a lot the past few weekends. A few times I just gave up, wondering if I would see my beloved CT again!

I find that the site is very unresponsive at times due to the number of external sites it links to. If any of those sites is unresponsive then CT has to wait for them and doesn't load its own pages until all the info from the other sites has been retrieved. It's not much fun to see the whole process hang while a message such as "resolving host x.y.z..." or "waiting for host x.y.x... " or "transferring data from x.y.z..." where site x.y.z is some external site.

Is it possible to recode the CT pages in such a way that the external references don't cause the whole process of loading a CT page to just hang?

Why is it even necessary to access all of those external sites every time a new CT page is loaded? Can't the info be stored on a local server that is updated regularly behind the scenes and have the CT pages access that local server for the advertising content rather than link directly to the external sites?

Brian

Downloaded a new browser (Opera) into my mobile smartphone and now I have Cruise Talk in my pocket and available 24/7, at home and at work. Is this an addiction or what? :-) It comes in handy especially weeks like this one where I am woking 2-12hr shifts and 4-16hr shifts and have no time at home to surf the net. And even though it was an extra $20 for the browser it was worth it. A much better and faster browser for my phone.

There are also few posts lately, and not much heated debate.
Is something happening ?

No cruise fatigue I hope.

Hi Johan

Often when a heated debate starts posts get removed !

It seems someone has a big red pen to use !

It does not happen on the other shipping website where I am a Supervisor !

In all due respect, then why do you still post here?

Deletion of posts/editing of posts is pretty rare here. It's not the 'heated debate' that gets removed, it's normally when members start insulting each other. It does not make nice reading.

Joe, maybe you should consider moving CT over to the latest state-of-the-art message board that InfoPop evolved into: Here's what Groupee looks like which is what InfoPop evolved into.

Sure it does, but just like on CT you have to register as a user/member..just hit "reply in the lower right corner, once you open a thread that is. Or upper right corner, Login/Join.

I did post with a link to another site and it was deleted. It was a very informative site about cruise ships. I did see the post briefly and then it disappeared. I even e-mailed Joe as to why it was deleted with no response. So let me post it again on another seperate post and see if it disappears again. This site is very good and not at all offensive--but maybe too competative for CT???

Frosty,

I don't have a problem with members posting links to their own sites but if we let anyone post links to any site that undercuts our ability to sell advertising. In general, those types of links are deleted and that's the reason why.

Anyone is welcome to join the forum so instead of posting a link to another site, I would encourage you to ask the owner of the other site to join and participate. If they don't want to join that's fine, just don't advertise their site here.

I like CT the way it is too. Maybe discussions are down because there's nothing really new about cruising in general. No more Premier to bash LOL. Where are those red boats when you need them?

I'm not aware of other commercial web sites that allow links to travelpage.

"Maybe discussions are down because there's nothing really new about cruising in general".

Yes, the amount of chat is directly linked to events in the cruise industry. There's nothing like a big new ship to get people talking.

After looking at the link to this other site there does not seem to be any advertising??, just info about various ships from different cruise lines. It was posted as I felt it gave one a lot of info which would be helpful on a future cruise and info in general. I agree that any site that is major competition with CT should not be linked.
I would like to know if CTers looked at this site and found it worthwhile to take a look see??
I meet meet with Rich Wagner on our Solstice cruise(trivia team player) who writes for this site.
Let me know.
