Dear all,

Since mid-2012, three quite large Japanese ferries from the 90s have been languishing in lay-up at Aioi, Japan. It concerns the SUISEN (1996) of Shin Nihonkai Ferry, the UTOPIA 2 (ex-NEW SHIRAYURI, 1987) and the SUZURAN (1996) also of Shin Nihonkai. In fairness, the SUZURAN was sold to the Japanese government in 2013 and renamed HAKUOU, but it seems that she also spends most of her time idle at Aioi.

Does anyone know what is going on here?

Did you find any answers? The 2 sisters SUISEN & SUZURAN were replaced by 2 new ferries of the same names in 2012 [Ocean Liners posted in a thread here]. They were up for sale prior to that, but can't have been any takers for further work, apart from the government as stated. These 2 were the first to be fitted with contra rotating pods - were there any problems?

In the past some of the greek ferry companies have shown interest in buying old japanese ferries but it might be that with the various new polution regulations these ferries would require too much updating and be too old for service in greek waters.
