Favorite memorabilia from on board a cruise: Original CGT clothes hangers which were still on board NORWAY in 1981 (until I brought them home.) Also a Greek Line blanket from my cabin the first time on CARIBE I.

Favorite memorablilia in my collection: the bronze medallion with presentation box from Maiden Voyage of NORMANDIE. Also a pair of cufflinks in mint condition from the maiden voyage of VATERLAND in 1914.

I "excchanged" them with new replacement items--these were in crew cabins where the crew members didn't care about the provenance of these things, as long as I brought them new hangers and a new blanket, which I did.

I also got a number of Union-Castle line blankets off the FESTIVALE in the early days, which were being used by the crew as drop cloths for painting!

Rich,
I have the same hangers. They ended up in my luggage after a sailing on her in July 1980. She had just become the NORWAY at that point. None were remaining by the time I returned a couple years later.

I also really like my Costa funnel ashtray, and Royal Viking crystal logo, but most of all my LEONARDO DA VINCI builders book.

I stole my hangers off the NORWAY. Are you going to come arrest me? I think I was 13 at the time and I knew a collectors item when I saw it.

Hi Ernie

I was curious about how they were obtained.

Having done the de-storing of eight of the P & O cruise / passenger ships before they went to the breakers or sold to Japan or Greece, as happened with the ss Oriana and the ss Strathmore, it is amazing what is found in the way of new stock that has been in a locker and forgotten about.

My first destoring was the ss Strathmore in 1963, before she was sold to J. Latsis,

On there we found one locker that was stocked up with new silver plate ware and had not touched from about 1948 !

On ss Oriana we found a locker full of new non smoking type ashtrays with the chrome tops and the Orient Line badge on them.

My collection has increased over the years !

No problem. I was thinking you might condemn me as a hardened criminal for taking those FRANCE hangers at 13 years old! Some kids stole bubble gum, I took some hangers ... and pretty cool hangers at that. They were not wire either. Where today could you find hangers with a cruise line logo on them?

Wow. De-storing. That would be a very cool thing to do. I was working for Princess when SUN PRINCESS was removed from the fleet. A lot of people were talking about the de-storing process. It sounded like something I would have loved.

I only wish I had more. I think I have five all together. They are from a former tourist class cabin. I wonder if first class had different hangers?

I have a Greek Line pin that I won horseracing on the Queen Anna Maria when a child.

When de-storing my late grandmother's house I got some blank American Export baggage tags from the 1950's.

When my grandmother sold her house in the late 1970s, I found a box full of old blank luggage tags from the 1930s-1960s that my late grandfather had collected. There were tags from the Matson Line, Cunard, USL, CGT, Claridges and the Dorchester Hotels, Pan Am, BOAC etc. etc. I still have them.

I have a number of spoons from cruise ships, as well as menus and menu covers. My prize is a menu cover from the Norway. I also have a paint jar with "actual" royal blueish paint from the Norway that I used to paint my Norway model. I have a trophy from when I won the dance competition on the Norway too. I have boxes and boxes of brochures and papers and I also collected daily programs from many of the cruises I have been on, even some from when I worked on the ships. I have a plastic whistle from a Queen Mary life jacket. I also have a "wooden" oven scraper that I found while wandering around the Big U in 1986 in Norfolk. I could go on and on...I also have an SS United States life jacket, and one of those aluminum vases. I have a small junk of rusted steel from Titanic, given to me from a friend who was on one of the expeditions.

All those other things are boring aren't they - swizzel sticks, menus, hangers, key rings, labels, stickers, ash trays - only kidding Oh I have a few bits and pieces, some collected and some given to me by very kind people. But I also have a piece [splinter] of SAGA ROSE's decking from when she first had a refit for Saga & various bits of rusty steel from ageing Greek ferries & PS Ryde.. makes for an interesting chat at times Glad I am not the only one with bits of rust about.

Hi Pam

Talking of oldies I have a desk pen/pencil holder, which holds six pencils or pens, and is made from timber reclaimed from the ss ' Great Britain' when she was being re-fitted.

These were sold as souvenirs shortly after she arrived at Bristol.

It has a small plaque attached saying where the timber has come from.

Sounds like everyone who's posted here have some very interesting items..I do have a small bit of the QUEEN MARY in Long Beach, a friend of mine took some of the metal and bent it back and forth and gave it to me, that was nice of him, but I was afraid for him to do that. I have my 2 items I bought last year from the SS NORWAY, the emergency signs used for both passengers and crew. Scads and scads of postcards, luggage tags, deckplans, matches...you name it. I have a book used for Premier Cruise Line pax when they came on board, it's not supposed to be removed, however I did not steal it, I asked a steward for it. I have towels from Princess and Costa that I should not have taken. I have 2 towels from the CROWN DEL MAR, was told it was okay to take them home. And the list goes on....

Mine is an incredible book on the Bremen of 1929. Here's a link to site where they are auctioning off a copy:

My copy is signed by Kommodore Leopold Ziegenbeins and his calling card is pasted in the front cover.

I have a small trophy (6" tall) that my dad won for his hobo costume on Masquerade Night on Farrell Lines' African Enterprise in August 1955. It's a gold coloured metal cup on a white plastic base. Inscribed on the cup is "S.S. African Enterprise". The plate on the base that had the winner's name disappeared years ago. They actually engraved the name before handing it out. I also have a photo of my dad taken at dinner that night.

I have a LLoyd Triestino key chain from 1959. The ship names "M/S Africa" "M/S Europa" are inscribed on the back and the front has the LLoyd Triestino name and a silhouette of one of the 2 ships.

The above-mentioned items are tarnished with age but would clean up nicely if I put my mind to it.

I also have 4 menus from the Captain's "Welcome Aboard" dinner held aboard Europa on Sunday August 30, 1959. The art work on the front of each menu is different and my mom made sure that my dad, my brother and I gave her our menus before we left the dining room. My 2 sisters ate earlier with the other kiddies on board. Otherwise, I'd have 6 menus.

I also have some QE2 Scotch jugs, a few decks of QE2 playing cards and assorted other trinkets that were handed out as prizes for winning various quizes.

Of course the African Enterprise and Europa items have more sentimental value to me than the QE2 items because they were acquired when travelling with my family while growing up.

Brian
