I have never seen an escalator on a cruise ship. Are they considered to be too dangerous?? Possibly because of ships movements especially in heavy seas??

I've been on a couple of ships that had escalators. They went up only one deck and were pretty safe. I never saw them running to where they escalator was going downwards. At times they were just shut off and not running at all.

Holland America had escalators aboard STATENDAM, MAASDAM, RYNDAM, and VEENDAM in the 1990s. They connected Main Deck with Lower Promenade, at the bottom of the atrium. Predictably, they presented the same hazard as on land: people got to the top and simply stood there, meanwhile people behind them piling up and falling. In refits over the years, these escalators were removed from the ships.

While passenger escalators are rare, they have been a common feature on ships since the 1930s for crewmembers, especially connecting galleys with dining rooms, and upper levels of dining rooms.

On one of my cruises on the SS NORWAY, the galley had an escalator going up and down for the table stewards going to the Leeward Dining Room and back. Not sure if it was operational at the time. I'm glad I got this photo:

I believe the SS Nieuw Amsterdam ('38) had an escalator for dining room stewards to get from the food preparation area to the dining room. I'm not certain of this, but I seem to remember it from what I read. I sailed on N.A. as a small child, but don't remember seeing it.

Norwegian Epic has a couple of escalators for passengers between decks 5 and 6. In addition, the Manhattan dining room galley is below it, so 'up' and 'down' escalators are provided.

(Epic Galley Escalator)

Oasis/Allure have some that take you down to the disembarcation/security points.

(I believe the SS Norway's galley escalator still functioned until the end).

Galaxy and Mercury were among my favorite ships. Would love to get back on Century before I leap into the Solstice-class.

I remember the escalator on Massdam when I was on her. I forget exactly what year it was but I think that was my first encounter with shipboard escalators.

I think several modern cruise ships have escalators between the MDR and galley when they're located on different decks.

Carnival Liberty has escalators for waiters to go from the galley to the upper part of the dinning room.

Costa Marina and presumably Allegra have passenger escalators down to the dining room. Oasis and Allure have them at the lowest disembarkation points. The longest passenger escalators at sea must be on Mediterranean Ferries. These carry passengers up from quayside level at the stern to the passenger decks usually at least 4 decks up.

Rotterdam (V) most certainly had escalators getting the crew between the dining room and the galley one deck below. They used them to both go up and down. Must have been fun on a rocking and rolling ship to carry a tray full of diners on one of those escalators.

Veendam/Volendam ex.Argentina/Brasil had them too because the gallery was below the dining room.

The first ship I remember seeing them for passengers was the Costa Marina and Rich mentioned the Statendam class.

Yet to see any moving sidewalks, but a few Canadian Pacific ships had revolving doors!

Yes, I still remember the revolving door aboard CARNIVALE (EMPRESS OF BRITAIN) which connected the Dolphin Bar to the enclosed Promenade. That door and the whole bar were removed during her big refit in the early 1980s.

ALLURE and OASIS both have escalators at the fore and aft embarkation stations that take you from the boarding door directly up to the elevator foyer a deck higher.

QM2 has one to the galley as well, and I *think* I recall one on the previous ARCADIA [PACIFIC PEARL] in the centre of the dining room down to the galley?

Attached is a pic of the galley escalators on the CELEBRITY MILLENNIUM.

I think these days more ships have escalators than not.

I was on the Mille- did a Horn cruise. I think I just forgot that the Mille had an escalator.
I guess once you have a lot of cruises under your belt they seem to blend in so you forget what was on the ships. Unless they have very unique features(ice rink)
I do remember the Buffet on the Solstice class ships because of all the islands presenting the various food stuffs. Lots of vaiety but also a lot of traffic.
