I was surfing the web and found this site about a hotel barge named Olympia.
It definitely doesn’t win first price in a beauty contest, but still the concept of a mobile hotel is fascinating and I thought some of you might find it interesting to see as well.

Here is the site:Hotel ship Olympia
It has specifications, deck plans, and pictures of the huge container. Surprisingly the interior (though hotel like) isn’t as brutal as the outside.

"Brutal" is too kind. Hideous is the first thing that came to my mind.

it reminds me of the Novotel concept , cheap hotels that are perfect for one night stay if you travel by car and alone or with 2 , not for a family.

The 'Palapa' Spanish for the thatched palm covered pergola adds a certain festive tropical look to this barge. It looks like some naval housing I have seen at the former Long Beach, CA shipyard

What's the best thing about the interior? (All together now The best thing about the interior is that you can't see the exterior!

According to Cunard, she is a "true ocean liner" in every sense of the word! Sound familiar!

Hilarious make-overs! I like the HAL version best, which isn't saying much.

Sounds good! I'll post my review after her December transatlantic crossing! She is "ocean liner" after all!

Onno - I took pictures of the Olympia when I was in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1991. At that time she was used as a floating hotel for foreign construction workers who were working in Russia. Thanks for the link!

When I was in Vietnam in the '60s, floating hotels were concrete barracks on barges. Some still exist in the naval inventory. This is but one configuration, and is not concrete.

But how things change. Check out this floating hotel in Saigon today.

Don't you Yanks have something similar anywhere up a river which is a floating prison? Or am I mistaken.

Onno can you add a bow to one of these? I am curious to see how much different it can be from today's box-shaped cruise ships.

Thanks for the laughs.

When i was i kid i read a book by Jules Verne about a floating island travelling arround the world.I can say that one of my kid dreams was to live on . With a city,rail,2 small ports , parks and much more . Well i belive that is the future. If Jules verne predicted(writed) that in one day we will go in space , why not a floating island ??

Onno,
the sistership of this floating hotel, is quietly laid up in Portsmouth!
Spotted when sailing on former Olau Hollandia.
Talk or shout, waste picture or not, I don't know what to think of the floating prison ship.
When you think that Eugenio C and Amerikanis were considered as floatings prison.....
Why not just convert containers in hotel/cabin units?
Containerships arenot called Liners for nothing !

Pam,
you remeber that much maligned prison ship that was kicked out of Weymouth, then left to greet the Crystal Symphony in Southampton?

HMP Weare in all her glory

from this site.

She was bought by for £4 million from the New York prison authorities, towed into Portland harbour, Dorset, in March to ease overcrowding in Britain's jails. Deemed a sight for sore eyes, but Louy I think she is still there?

Read this page today. Maybe use Bibby Goteborg as student accommodation in S'ton.
