I was just reading the Maritime Q&A and am fascinated by the details of the Williamson Turn and other manoeuvres, to put a ship back where the "Man Overboard" was reported.

But with new ships having pods and GPS etc, would they need to make such moves?

the pods are just a method of propulsion and steering. person overboard will not have a transmitter so gps will be of little use when MAN OVERBOARD is sounded watch officer could get a position for refrence where the person fell overboard. the ships with pods as well as conventional ships have infromation availible to deck watch officers telling the handiling carituriscts of that ship ie. turning circle at various speeds etc

If someone falls overboard, ummm isn't there a chance they will get sucked underwater and chopped to pieces by the screws? Or is that a myth?

The record of the ship's track will have been recorded and reversing and going back on the recipricol would be much simpler than in the days before gps. That,after all, was the idea of doing a Williamson turn.
