I appreciate that it is a big question, but what is it like working for a major cruise line onboard a ship? Why work on a ship instead of a shore-side job? Why do you want to leave Carnival?
We have a number of readers who are considering careers at sea.
I always wanted to be a Stage Manager and light technician/designer but I didn't know anybody in the business and was afraid I wouldn't be able to get my foot in the door.
On the QE2 my responsibilities were to coordinate and program the lighting ques for the shows. I also worked with the sound on occassion. Below is a photo of the Zenith dancers that I worked with backstage.

Which one is you?
Since you know all the "behind the scenes" details of how a cruise line operates first hand, do you find it difficult going on a cruise and just relaxing as a paying passenger.
My father worked for American President Lines in the South Pacific from the mid 1960's to early 1970's. Ever since then he has rejected the idea of a cruise vacation. My mother, who had the opposite feeling, would still cruise 2 to 3 times a year with her best friend and not my dad. Then finally, after being off his ship for 25 years, we were able to get him into Grand Princess for their wedding anniversary, but it wasn't easy.
I love to cruise...every opportunity I can get away on a cruise ship still isn't enough. I do recall cruising on the Majesty of the Seas in 1995 as a passenger, and feeling like I should be doing something, like hosting bingo or greeting passengers at the doors. Today, Cruise ships have changed so much from the days that I worked on them. Take the Voyager of the Seas for example...I would never have imagined that a cruise ship would have a parade through mainstreet (in that huge atrium). Also, the technology has changed with internet connections and high-tech sound & light boards. I'm more than happy to just be a passenger.

This is similar joke in a Woody Allen Film. It goes something like this:
Woody says "My job is to help the girls off with their costumes". Woody's mate says how much for? Woody replies "$20 a week". Woody's mate says "that's not much"! Woody says "Yes, but It's all I can afford to pay them".
So where can I get that sort of Job, Barry?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I left carnival becuase my contract was up. I'm not returning to Carnival because of the amount of work for the amount of was was rediculas. I signed on under the direction of there would be 17 hrs a week of shows and 4 hrs of maintaince. when in actuallity it was 25 hrs of shows and 30 hrs of maintance. The ship was not maintained well by past lighting techs, and it was hard to get supplies to the ship to fix things, the requistion system did work well. there were major power problems that cause tons of difficulties like fried power boards in the intel lighting and scrollers, blown amps. we were told it was becuase the eletrical enginers were paid by the linear ft to install it. I belive it because my loung was deck3-5 forward and I had breakers for ventialtion(for pyro) on deck 11 aft.We had a joke , if carnival was restaurant it would be Mc Donalds. and Princeses or RC would be the Keg.We worked 6 days straight (7 day cruise)and had Sunday off if you werent on pager duty/orange card duty.
