there is new technology in burning coal in boilers.
the coal (pulverized) is sprayed
through nozzles into the boilers
fire box.
using low sulpher coal would this
be feasible to operate a steam
turbine?
since the price of oil is on its
way up in price and coal is stable in price and quantity
why have we not seen a return
to steam?
diesels are more fuel effiecent
but can only burn oil.

The Australians had a couple of large bulk carriers using this type of system. They were on the coal run to Japan so fuel was not a problem, which it would be in most cases. Whether they are still operating or not I don't know.

It would be difficult to totally automate a coal fired boiler for unmaned at night operation.This means at least 2 persons on watch as long as the boilers are in use.thus adding 6 more persons to the crew,not counting coal passers and trimmers. ash disposal would have to be dealt with--more labor involved. coal availibity is limited,Dont think it is availible in the Caribbian ports coal storage is tricky, has to be constantaly monitired for spontanious combustion. loading of coal is VERY dusty and dirty,not desired on a passenger ship. Steam turbines are only efficent when running 80% or higher, most cruise ships do not operate at any where near 80% speed. During the 1973 oil crisis, a study was held comparing coal boilers with skinner uniflow engine (Per S.S. Badger) and a slow speed Deisel.
However the oil crisis slacked off,and the idea was dropped.

The 2 Australian ships where built in Japan in 1982/3 and were Bulk Carriers 75,500 deadweight (tonnes) named River Boyne and River Embley, to carry bauxite from Weipa to the refinary in Gladstone, Queensland. The coal was fed by gravity down a long chute and designed for periodically unattended operations. They did a service spead of 14.5 Knots. If they were successful I don't know, I have never heard glowing reports of there success or other wise..B
