Do you want to steer a ship? Some excursion vessels now officially allow passengers to steer the ship for a while. These ships are maybe not as large as some leviathan ocean-going cruise ships but 70 m length is still a respectable size.

The paddle wheeler Stadt Wien and the excursion vessel Admiral Tegetthoff - both operating on the Danube river - offer packages which include 15 minutes 'behind the wheel':

It does not say that one is allowed to steer but one can book a 'VIP package' aboard the ships on Lake Luceren which includes a visit to the engine room and the wheel house:

I got to steer the QE2 in the Norwegian fjords, it was so cool to steer the wheel, and actually see the horizon move ahead as the ship responded to my command.

It is a heady experience steering a passenger ship, for sure. I've steered the Str. BELLE OF LOUISVILLE (www.belleoflouisville.org) several times on the Ohio River. I also got to handle her antique steam engines once. The other steamboat I got to steer was the JULIA BELLE SWAIN on the Mississippi River and the Illinois.
