On our upcoming cruise to Alaska on HAL,we booked a superior suite. However this was a guaranteed deal. That means that they will assign your cabin 7-10 days before sailing. Hence we don't know where we will be as of now.
We usually pick our cabin when booking.
All of this type cabin are mid ships. So I hope we get a decent one away from elevators and crew access doors.
They claim we might get an upgrade to a Deluxe suite(Bigger) but that IMO is highly unlikely as this is our 1st cruise on HAL.
Comments???

The upgrade fairy might surprise you with a Deluxe Suite - you never know.

We've often taken a Superior Suite, in fact that is what we have on our Eurodam cruise at Xmas as they were 1/2 the price of a Deluxe.

Don't worry about being near an elevator - you will never hear them opening/closing - they are in a separate alcove - I've never heard anyone complain about noise from the elevators, unlike a hotel where I was stuck beside the elevator and didn't sleep all night!!

What ship are you booked on and where are you sailing to?

OOPS - see you are going to Alaska.

Personally I have not had the best luck booking guarantees, but often times there is no other option as it's the only thing the cruise line is offering. Once in a blue moon you may get upgraded (and I'm talking a true upgrade, not just a higher deck), but much more likely is a cabin location that is simply not that desirable (way forward, or aft, or by the foyers). These are the left over cabins that those booking actual cabin numbers have not chosen.

Keep in mind this is not always the case, as cruise lines these days like to "upsell". It's when you get a call to pay for a better cabin grade, usually (but not always) at a discounted price. When this happens and the passenger accepts, this may open up a very desirable location to be assigned to a guarantee depending on the original cabin booked.

With cruise lines maximizing every last $$ of revenue with the "upsell" program, complimentary "upgrades" are almost unheard of these days on the major lines. Usually "upgrades" only happen after all the "upsells" have been completed, and I figure it's rare these days that cruise lines don't get takers for the "upsells". The cruise line employees that call about these "upsells" are basically sales people, and they can be very persuasive in perhaps making a deal sound better than it actually is.

Regarding HAL specifically, I find them to be very conservative with cabin assignments. One time on OOSTERDAM I booked a suite category like you, and waited and waited for the cabin assignment. Many will say the longer you wait the better your chance for an upgrade. This has not been my experience. Well about two days prior to sailing we finally got our suite assignment, and it was in the exact same category we booked the guarantee in. Somewhat of an anti-climax for certain.

Some also say the first time cruisers get the upgrades. There may be some truth to this. The cruise line may figure they already have the frequent cruiser "hooked" so no need to upgrade, but a first time cruiser is still impressionable so give them the upgrade they will always remember. Who knows for certain, but it's one theory.

Anyway good luck!

Ernie

Sept 10 is getting near the end of the Alaska cruise season so you may be pleasantly surprised with a nice upgrade. Students are back at school so it should be pleasantly quiet and nearly "all adult."

Yes, there should be few children aboard at that time. 11 years ago on an Alaska cruise we had almost 500 kids onboard during a July sailing on Princess. They were running all over the place.

Doubt you will see colour - too early for that.

One perk is that the stores will be having big sales as most of them close down after the cruise season.

A few years ago I was on the cruise which returned to Vancouver Labour Day week-end and there were great sales in all the stores.

Got our cabin assignment yesterday.
Navigation Deck. SS 8097
Starboard side aft. Near the stairwell and elevators but not too close.
Pretty high up. Should be good to go to dinner as all we have to do is go down.
We had a SY category but SS is NOT an upgrade.

Congrats on the cabin assignment. Not surprised you didn't get an upgrade, for the reasons I described earlier in the thread. "Upsells" are the new "upgrade".

Got a call today from our travel agent informing me of the cabin assignment. (Which of course I already knew due to my review on the online documents from HAL
I did find out that the SS type cabins cost more than the SY even though the cabins are the same. It's all about location. As stated previously this cabin is high up and aft(don't know about the aft being desireable)???
Anyway it's an upgrade to some extent???? At least in HAL's eyes it is.
The agent also told me they were offering an upgrade to Deluxe suite for $250/person--she checked and they were all gone now.
There are a lot of things a deluxe suite offers that might have been worth it.??? But she said we will be happy with the size of the superior suite.
I'M ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!
