Mexico and Jamaica rank right up there along with most every Caribbean Island on my list of places I dont care to go back to, hence I pick a nice ship that I will enjoy and stay on it while they are in port.
As for the 'drug trade killing spree', Americans are for the most part very, very safe. Just use common sense and stay in very well travelled tourist areas and in groups of 3 or more.

Sorry but this sounds a lot like what I have delt with many times here in our own country, the US.
Personally I wouldn't hesitate to visit Mexico. Its a beautiful and vibrant country with great people and a very interesting culture. But like Lasuvidaboy pointed out you need to get away from the tourist areas to really experience it. Of course you should always be carefull though, like with any place.
Why I dislike Mexico:
Lost employment due to company going to border towns(where drug trade runs wild)
Police rip offs-your a gringo and it's your fault always.
Illegals coming across for free medical care( one of the major issues now facing the health care debate.)
Here in the US, landscaping personnel who look at you with scorn while working on your neighbors lawn.--I cut my own grass and do landscaping myself.--exercise is good!
I think you get my drift.

So that's an indictment of your neighbors, not the people who work for them. No reason to dislike another country for that!

I mow my own lawn too! I always joke that I was the last white kid in my hometown here in So Cal to mow lawns and deliver the evening paper (the Pasadena Star News) and we lived in a very upscale community. Today adults (mostly Latinos) do those jobs as well as bagging groceries which was always done by high school kids. I think the blame goes to the parents of today's kids that don't want their little darlings to get their hands dirty from good hard work. I am scared for this country as we have now raised at least two generations of kids that are incredibly lazy and expect the 'brown' people to do the work.

Well yes, I do understand that feeling. I mow my own lawn, too, while most of my neighbors have lawn services. In fact, I avoid going out to cut the grass if they're working across the street or next door at that moment, if only to avoid them coming over to hand me a business card!

Honestly if I was in their situation I think I would too. I wouldn't want to go through the heath care system there and I can't blame them for not wanting to either.

I understand what you are saying but honestly I don't share that feeling. A lot of these people really need good health care and personally I think that these people being heathy is more importaint then me not wanting to pay for their health care. The USA being a world leader has a responsiblilty first to its self and its people and then to the rest of the world. We can't be too selfish with any of our resources especially when it comes to peoples health and lives.
The heath care bill scheduled for vote today says one thing. Votes!!!!! Minority Votes!!!! The H--- with the economy, jobs, the wars.is the message I get from Obama. This country is going down fast, In the next 10 years we will be a 3rd World country. China will be #1. Isn't it already. Do we make anything in the US anymore????F4
Even in Hurricane Katrina the US initally refused assistance from almost every single country that offered it, arrogant in that we could take care of it ourselves. And remember it wasnt just New Orleans that got hit. Huge tracts of the Mississippi coast were decimated, completed wiped off the face of the earth. Katrina reportedly dislocated over a million people to other states.

And it isnt just racial minorities or 'border crossers' in need of health care they cant afford. There are middle class white families that have lost jobs, become homeless, been displaced, declared bankruptcy, had major health care problems, and folks with terminal illnesses that need help. The Health Care industry has crushed those in need while raking in record profits year after year. Your lack of compassion and understanding of these issues is disturbing.

I know we are among the first responders, being aworld leader America has that responsibility to poorer nations. You can't really compare disaters here to disaters in coutries like Haiti. The US is in a much better position to handle disaters then Haiti. We have much more money, better infrastructure and better regulations in place to help us with disaters.

Of course they are bad. People being killed like that is never not a bad thing. The point is that these disaters (US disaters) are nowhere near as devastating as others like in Haiti.

Corruption! The neighbor country Dominican Replublic seem to be fareing better than Haiti. They share the same island.Economy wise.I as an old time American have different views mainly due to when our country was a world powerwhen patriotism was alive. Today nobody seems to give a d--- except for themselves.Disturbing maybe. At least I can speak for those who have the same views.F4
You have twisted my words. I said that the two types cant be compared. Each is a tragedy in its own way. The lives of those lost in the 9/11 attacks were just as precious to us as the 200,000 souls lost in the Haitian earthquake were to those who lost them.
The main reason the Dominican Republic was not as effected by the earthquake as Haiti is that the seismic wave that was generated by the earthquake went towards the SW panhandle of Hispaniola, and NOT towards the Dominican Republic. Any significant damage would have disapated by time it reached that country.
The thing that makes our country great is that in our patriotism we come to the aid of others that cant help themselves. We help the helpless. And there are those, me among them, that say it is our responsibility to help others in need. It is what Christians, and Christian nations, do. Help.

Bravo!

But I ask who really stepped forward to help us on 9/11?Many countries hate us because we can take care of our selves. The rich, ugly Americans. We got were we are by hard work, we don't look for hand outs. One of the tricks played by Mexico is to come here and have their kids born here hence becoming US Citizens then we have to keep them(parents) because they need to take care of the child-most probably with free heathcare. The heath care bill scheduled for vote today says one thing. Votes!!!!! Minority Votes!!!! The H--- with the economy, jobs, the wars.is the message I get from Obama. This country is going down fast, In the next 10 years we will be a 3rd World country. Three Things:
Before you play the victim here, maybe you should do at least a little bit of reading. Plenty of countries helped out during both Katrina and 9/11 in terms of aid, money and military assistance. Even Iran offered assistance.
The same things that are said about Mexicans were once said about the Irish and Italians.
Your country is not going down because of public healthcare. The Chinese (and most of the world) have it and they seem to be doing ok.
Stop freaking out.

Baja always had a strong connection to the States even more so than mainland Mexico. Before the trans-peninsula highway was completed in the mid-1970s, the only way to get there from the US was by private plane, boat or a weekly commercial flight on a DC3 (which I took many times as a kid). John Wayne's large yacht 'Wild Goose' was a regular caller in Baja in those days sailing down from his home on Balboa Island. It was a very different place in those days.
