With all the ships being seized by pirates these days, why don't they consider an approach used in WW II --Convoys with multiple vessels protected by a screen of destoyers?? Safety in numbers. Fortunately the pirates don't have submarines (WWII)which stalked the convoys and sunk ships.
A blockade is not practical off the coast of Somalia due to it's length.

I would say that the convoy system is impractical as well, just due to the high number of freighters, but I see where you are coming from.

What I would lean towards would be Q ships.

Have a number of freighters set up with armed forces hiding, put some 50mm guns up and just draw them in, 4-10 Somali pirates against a squad of rangers would make for a short, interesting encounter.

That was my thought as well! Blow the crap out of them. There's no government in Somali so who will object?

"Convoys" have been in place through the Gulf of Aden since last Nov. Intention of passage is submitted to the coalition forces to enable them where possible to coordinate transit with other vessels and an escort.
Doing this down the east coast of Africa would be impossible.

Blowing the pirates up is not the answer to anything, and as seen in past months who knows those being blown up really are the pirates. The Somalis need an income; stop paying the ransoms - millions have been paid over already this year. But that is not possible when there are fellow colleagues going to suffer. The Somalis need another source of income to stop the piracy ...

How are they going to make money? Sell dirt to South Dakota? The millions these pirates have already made could be given to the poor instead of building mansions for themselves.

Hence the ... I don't profess to know but something needs to be done, as with $ms every month none of these pirates are ever going to attempt to do anything else. If indeed mansions are built then some of that money is going into whatever there is of an economy. They used to be fishermen but that disappeared long ago when with no government fishing limits disappeared.

Pam et al

Just from a US point of view and the way the press is playing it.

This is going to come to a head pretty quickly, the US press is screaming for blood, the public isn't far behind, so I figure at some point someone will take an AK47 and try and take out a destroyer, with the obvious results.

At that point who knows, the press may back lash against the "heavy handed treatment" who knows.

I will say this, if the pirates are stupid enough to start killing crews then they are going to find out that they picked the wrong playground to be a bully on.

If there was a simple effective answer matters would have been dealt with long ago. The press are very good at manipulation and would not be privy to detail, so guess.

Read today's news.
