There are those formerly in the US Navy who may remember that when the identify of a ship was in question, the signals A A? or __ . __. were flashed on the signal lights, meaning "What Ship? Thereby requesting an ID.

This ship was in the French Navy Facility at Brest, and was photographed from the good ship Saga Rose on Sept 30th last.

If I were to guess, it was used in monitoring nuclear tests in Polynesia several decades past.
