When I have been researching cruises and cruise ships, I have often come across the offer that the galley staff will prepare a dish for you if you find nothing to your liking on the menu. I realize that there are limits to this offer. Has anyone ever taken advantage of this offering?

Suppose I asked for "Steak and Kidney" in a pastry wrap, would I be likely to get it (provided the food items required were available)?

..Kenneth..I really like Stk&Kidney. I usually have a dark lager with it.

Depends on the cruise line, but I would say NO for Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity, and most of the major cruise lines in the medium market. Even on the QE2 or QM2, the only place you may be able to get away with this would be the Queen's Grill.

That service may have died away with the trans-Atlantic era. I know on the Queen Mary (1936), for example, you could order whatever you wanted even if it were not on the menu (First Class only), and the waiter & galley staff would do everything possible to accomodate you.

When I was a passenger on the QE2, in the Mauretania Restaurant, The menui said "eggs any style", I asked for eggs benedict which is my favorite...and the waiter had no idea what I was talking about. Finally the head waiter came over and said that they don't have the sauce for the eggs benedict. They just didn't want to accomodate me...they could have made the sauce easy.

Also, today's cruise ships have a set and well planned out menu that doesn't change from week-to-week. To deviate from that menu plan would be a challenge. Imagine if 100 passengers all had special orders, it would cause chaos in the galley.

Barryboat said it all really. You are not going to get such special attention on mass-market ships and most are these days.

Hopefully Cunard's 'grill class' could still provide you with what you required, but you pay a lot of money for the privilege.

It's cheaper to eat steak and kidney pie at home!

On Silversea, Seadream Yacht, and Seabourn I don't think it would be a problem ... of course you will be paying a lot more than Carnival!

For individualized attention and special requests, you really need to stick with the luxury cruise lines. The mass-market lines do very poorly when asked to do anything outside the normal "programing", although they do quite well otherwise considering how many people are onboard.

On my last crossing on QE2 (2 years ago) I was fortunate enough to dine in the Britannia Grill, where you are still allowed, even encouraged, to order off the menu. As you finished lunch each day, you would be handed the dinner menu for that evening to peruse, and were asked if you would prefer something else. Apparently with a few hours notice, they would come up with your alternate choice, but frankly I never had the nerve or desire to order outside of the outstanding choices already offered!

The best food and service I've ever had on any ship were during that trip on QE2. Conversely, the worst ship food I've ever had was also on QE2, back in 1983 when I dined in Tables of the World Restaurant!

Don't you mean Stables of the World (as it was called by the crew)? The Londoner section was known derisively as the "Brickyard".
