I beliebe that USMC had planned to build 35,500 GRT ship for Trans-Pacific service.

In the book "Damned by Destiny", there was talk in the mid-50's of a replacement for the "America" of 1940 and a ship of similar size for American President Lines (45,000 tons and a virtual replica of the "United States"). The APL liner was even tentatively named "President Washington" and bids were tendered for their construction, but APL was not satisfied with the initial design, wanting something more advanced!

I thought that ships were planned to be replaced for President Coolidge / Hoover and designs were informed in the early 1940.

Renderings of the proposed 'President Washington' show a very slightly modified 950 foot long SS United States but in American President Line colors (she also would have looked a bit like the Grace Line twins of 1958-only much larger and with two funnels) Her tonnage was to have been approx. 45,000 and Gibbs and Cox were to design her. Had she been built as a two class liner and with outdoor pools, she may have had a later cruise career (under different ownership of course) that SSUS has never had.

I saw her rendering that two funnels with eagle but I supposed the ship was to be a 43,000 GRT ship.

APL-American President Lines stacks were painted red and blue with a white eagle logo in the middle portion. The approx. tonnage was in the 40,000-45,000 ton range. There hull was to be painted light grey, the same livery as APL's President Cleveland and Wilson of 1947 and their other ships.

President Cleveland / Wilson

USMC had changed its Organization to MARAD in 1950's.

Any more info on the USMC's P4-P plans/ships in the early 1940s ?
